Toytec Boss rear shocks

I've been scouring the internet left and right to look for answers for my soon to be purchased lift, and yes I've tried to extensively utilize the search function for this forum as well as the FAQ thread. I've narrowed my options to what I am looking for in a lift to two:

OME883/890
Bilstein 5100 front
Bilstein 5125 rear

and then the Toytec/Bilstein Kit with Eibach/Toytec Springs (p/n: BK9602)

3" lift ToyTec/Bilstein kit for 96-02 4Runner


My question is am I safe running the BOSS rear shocks? I've seen one or two threads or posts mentioning some QC issues as well as faults. Either it was the welds were not strong enough and snapped or the shaft being too narrow and snapping. I'm sure they are a good company and they provide excellent customer service from what I hear, I just want user feedback on their personal experience with the rear shocks.

I think Bilstein owns ToyTec. Therefore, I also believe the BOSS shocks are Bilstein shocks. I could be wrong, but on Bilsteins site, they talk about "our ToyTec coils" etc. Why would they say "our" ToyTec coils if they didn't own ToyTec?

Toytec does not...DOES NOT...build their own shocks/springs. Ask them....and I am sure they will be honest with you. Most people wont ask!! I have spend stupid hours on this site and every time I turn around there is new info. I just decided on 5100's because they are built for any lift. I added 906 rears today...not one issue on my 96!!

The Toytec boss shocks come with a resi now. Vs the 5100 don't. They are both basically same length shocks. So it's up to you

They have both. But the kit I'm looking at comes with boss rear shocks without it.

I'm just finding a difficult time looking for people that use it that aren't complaining about them breaking. Makes me worry.

Most people call that a CLUE!! Never talk yourself into something!! If its a POS you like it will not make it a nugget in the pan!!

Have you considered a LC based rear lift? Either a Sonoran Steel 1.2 (rear only) or complete 1.2 lift? You could always piece together a LC coils and Tokico shocks for the rears if you want to try to save a bit of money. It just sounds like part of your brain is telling another part of your brain that you don't want to go with a BOSS set up. As many will say, take your time, research, take more time and think where you want to end up. Many people are in a rush to get there runners lifted and within a year or two, sometimes less, they realize that they are unhappy with their initial choice and kick themselves because they are starting over and making the SAME mod, with OTHER components, vs. doing something else with that money.

It's up you in the end. But factor in overall lift target height, additional weight you plan to add to the vehicle and how it will effect that height, and overall ride comfort on and off road, longevity, and of course price. I think of mods as picking the right tool for the job.

Yeah I've looked at SS 1.2 before but I'm trying to keep my budget around or under 800-900 but I'm not too thrilled on using LC coils or shocks. But it can get confusing with all the different combinations and options out there to lift. I guess the research continues.....

I installed the toytec lift kit a few months ago. I liked it and it performed well offroad. I changed the rear to ome 861 and LC80 with night and day improvement. The toytec rear was rough and squats when loaded compared to the OME/LC80. I love my set up and didn't cost me arm and leg. The LC80 and OME coils performed very well offroad and able to hold all my gears without squatting. I won't go broke changing out LC80 shocks when time cause it only cost me $100 for both. Point being is don't cross out just yet LC coils, or ome 861(front LC 80 coils) and LC80 shocks if your on a budget.

I have the Toytec BOSS setup.. When I first got it I had Superflex and Bilsteins in rear... Then after the wreck I put 861's in rear with BOSS rear shocks. The BOSS rear shocks ride the same to me as the Bilsteins. I haven't been off-road with them yet but I'm not concerned with the quality one bit. I have a lot of weight on my runner with no issues... my two cents.

I'm running the Toytec Boss 9602 and I'm happy with it so far. Haven't super weighted it down yet to gauge sag, will have to check that in the spring.

This couldn't be more incorrect. The BOSS shocks are made by Eibach. If you have the BOSS lift you essentially have Eibach suspension re-branded as "Toytec BOSS". That's not to say the basis of design isn't directed off the bilstein shocks. There are obvious similarities. Toytec's Ultimate lift uses bilstein shocks with an Eibach coil. The BOSS kit is all Eibach, shocks and springs. Please post a link to where Bilstein claims toytec is theirs. Toytec is a privately owned small (turned multi-million dollar) business. I'm pretty good friends with the owner of Toytec. I can guarantee you it's not owned by bilstein.

Originally it was paired with the Bilsteins, but now they don't offer the extended Bilsteins they just offer the BOSS shocks in their kit.

I've decided to stick with Bilsteins for my lift! I'm gonna try to pull the trigger on some 883/890s Monday.

Would the ride quality be intolerable with the 883s and 5100s? Just trying to get a full 3in lift and not planning on getting a bumper or winch anytime soon.

If you go with heavy duty coils without weight it's going to be super stiff. I run 881s with 1" spacer and bumper/ winch with steel line and handles it fine.

For what it's worth I also recommend a SS rear lift with lc80 shocks over OME setup. It gives 3.5" lift so when loaded you don't sag and handles weight just fine. Rides great on highway and washboard. Best overall it's super flexy on trail and won't lift tires like ome springs tend to do. I recommend bending rear brake line down or extending and lowering rear bump stops.

Wouldn't running with the spacer be just as harsh? I had Daystar's before on an old truck and I'm trying to avoid that, and trying to bump up to 285/75 or 255/85.

No not at all. The 881 gets softer with weight. 1" preload dished spacer is unnoticeable. 883 will ride like rocks.

To add a bit of uncertainty to all this, I did have the 883s with the OME 90004 shocks and sure enough, rode like rocks.

Had a gift card to 4WP and decided to swap the shocks for some tundra 5100s and it's night and day different. Still firm, but not jarring at all. My fender liners will also tell you that I have no trouble stuffing the tires offroad.

My reasoning was that the 883s are rated at 590lb/inch and the Eibachs that a lot of people are running are rated at 620lb/inch. That got me thinking that maybe it was the shocks, and not the springs that were causing my rough ride.
