just wondering from the guys that have lifted their 4th gens which you would rather have? I drive in the desert sort of often and go to the dunes quite often in the winter. i am thinking about getting a small toy hauler that can fit 2 quads so i would be close to the 5k weight limit. i have a 2008 urban v6 with 4x4. i am going to put a tranny cooler on and can't decide on the shocks/springs setup. i love the idea of the 5100/fjc setup but can't find out too much on the toytec setup on the fronts. any thoughts? one more question, would airbags help in the rear or is that a waste of time/money? thanks for the input guys.

Which toytec setuo are u referring to? If the rear end is sagging under load, the air bags will definitely help level it out. If you tow a fiar amount, its a good investment imo.

Neither. XREAS + Daystar 2.5/1.5 + Airlift 1000. But if XREAS isn't an option for you or willing to go that expense, then probably Bilsteins all around + Airlift 1000 in the rear.
one more question, would airbags help in the rear or is that a waste of time/money? thanks for the input guys.

Would it help? Yes. Waste of money? No. Remember you can inflate/deflate the airbags per the necessary load... really depends on how much tongue weight you're planning. That v6 can easily pull 5k lb w/o a tranny cooler but again depends on the conditions, how much hauling, over what temps, over what hills/etc... Airbags are for helping out the rear suspension handling the tongue load ... that's about it. Any other factors you have to decide what makes sense for your needs.

i currently have xreas but the ride has gotten pretty soft recently. i feel every single bump. i was planning on 5100/fjc springs in the rear but not sure on the fronts. probably just to the same up front to take the rake away. i think i will get the bags in the rear to help with the load. im trying to find a toy hauler that is about 3400 dry i have 2 quads weighing about 340 each that leaves me with plenty of room to spare i beleive. tongue weight would be over the 500 but i don't think by too much. one thing for sure is that i am getting a tranny cooler though. i live in az. i don't do a lot of hot weather towing but it never does really cool down here too much. most of the towing would be done on fairly flat terrain but there are 2 mountains between me and cali that i have to go up. they haven't been a problem towing a trailer with 5 quads on it but it wasn't too easy on the runner. thanks for the input and i would love more if people are willing to give it.

Alright. Depends on what you're looking for. If you are seriously looking at doing more dunes than rock crawling and want a really good setup. Look at doing a Long Travel set up. Total Chaos has the best set up right now for our 4th Gens. Total Chaos 2005+ Toyota Tacoma/4Runner/FJ Long Travel Suspension System

If you're looking for more looks that will still hold up well. I say go with Toytec. You could go Ultimate Lift and get a really nice set up but if you're only looking for looks with mild off roading, go with a Spacer lift.

Ultimate Lift: FJ Cruiser/4Runner Ultimate 3" lift package - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

Spacer Lift: BEST SELLER! 3" FJ Lift Kit w/spacers and rear ToyTec coils - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

I started with a spacer lift and LOVED it. Also wheeled with it pretty well and it preformed great!

Either way, for hauling, definitely get the airbags. I also happen to have a set I'm willing to sell. Still in box, unused! PM me if interesed.

I don't think you can go wrong with either setup. I did the FJC/5100 setup as I was on a budget and didn't have the coin to drop on the Toytec setup. My FJC/5100 setup cost me just under $500 (installed myself). I plan on going to the top notch on the Billies and adding a rear spacer in the future when I need tires. Good luck

^when you say FJC coils are you talking about any stock FJC coils? I'm trying to do a search on which coils are being used in the FJC/bilstein set up and I can't find which coils yall are talking about.

appreciate any feedback because that's the set up I'm most likely going for just to level out the front.

THanks!

I have the Toytec Ultimate and love it. But I believe cost much more than doing an FJ swap. +1 Either one sounds great.

Yes, the stock OEM FJC coils. But make sure you get 4x4 coils. You can find them either on craigslist or just go to the FJC forum and sign up and look in the classified. That's where I got mine from and they're for sale all the time.

People like the FJC coils because they fit perfect on our T4R's and have a thicker bar stock that produces less body roll and nose dive under hard breaking. A great economical way to upgrade.

Thank you for your quick reply. I've also read that the FJC coils provide a stiffer ride. My dad has a Taco, will the ride quality be the same? Are the FJC coils that much stiffer than stock T4R? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks!

It's a little stiffer, but in my eyes thats a good thing. The stock suspension on my runner was mush (replaced everything at 95k miles). It absorbs bumps much better. If I wanted a plush ride I would've bought a Lexus :)

they're 0-2.5 of lift so of course u can use the 5100, keep em on lowest setting, if ur not lifting the front at all, u can save about 30 bux, depending on where u buy em, by getting the HD. most get the 5100 to raise the front, but u can always raise the front later with spacers if u change ur mind.

eastcoast runner, i just saw on another thread that u have the RAS, so the HD is the choice for u in the rear, the 5100 may be a little long to work with the bags, see ark about that.

Alright, now that I'm at my computer, I'll give you my thoughts.

I started with a spacer lift and FJ coils on the front of mine. I loved the improved ride, but unfortunately it was only in the front. The rear wasn't matched very well and it just felt awkward because the rear rode worse than the front. It was better than stock, it's just that when the front/rear isn't even it is much more noticeable.

After riding in a 4runner with the FJ swap and 5100's, I decided to go that route. I did 5100's and FJ coils on the front, and used the Bilstein HD's on the rear. The HD's, as mentioned, are the same valve rates as the 5100's so it should be a great match. After the swap, ride overall seemed to have improved (definitely in the front, everything I'm speaking of is about the rear). The rear now seems to bounce quite a bit. A good example is expansion joints in the highway. The front glides over it, nothing is felt. When the rear hits, it's felt and makes the bump feel ten times larger than the one the front went over. If I hit a speed bump at 15 mph or so, the front bounces but soaks it up very well, but the rear feels like it bounces off the ground. It's almost as if there's no shock back there, it's just a stiff ride. I had this issue before the swap, seems it's a little worse now though.

So, that led me to think it was the shocks. I then went through three other sets of shocks, thinking that the HD stocks were simply too stiff. My next choice was a set of Rancho RS9000XL's. I chose these because they have adjustable firmness. I could definitely tell a difference in ride quality when I adjusted them, but the bounce issue was still there, it didn't improve at all. I thought maybe even on the lowest setting they were too stiff, so I got a set of OEM FJ shocks. Same story with them. Last choice was a set of OEM non-xreas 4runner shocks. These are the softest of the ones I've tried, but still not much improvement at all in the bounce.

You may think I'm overplaying the bounce, but it's very noticeable and happens often. I don't think it's a related to ditching xreas, I think it is more about timing. I'm at over 150k miles, and I think my rear air system is on its way out. As soon as funds allow, I'm going to pull the bags and install some Toytec superflex coils with 5100 rears (for the added length over the HD's).

So, there's my experience with ditching xreas on a rear air equipped 4runner. It's been a rough road, a lot of money spent with little/no improvement (again, just in the rear). I still think this is limited to my 4runner and the system being worn, but thought it was worth sharing.

If you want to go this route, PM me and we'll work something out on the Bilstein HD rear shocks. I've got them laying around just taking up space, I think they *might* have 10k miles, no more than that.

I concur. I just installed a Radflo 2.0 adjustable lift but opted for the "lighter duty" 600# springs as I spend 95% of my miles on the pavement. I didn't realize how mushy my suspension was until I did the upgrade at 98k miles.

I have the adjusters set really low now and plan to raise it up another inch or so. It doesn't quite have the "wow" factor I was hoping for yet
