TPMS and winter wheels

Installed winter wheels with steel rims with no TPMS. Dash light is off. It comes on when I start the vehicle but then goes off as normal. My wheels with TPMSs are in garage. Any comments? Are TPMSs on my 07 Limited smart enough not to light dash light if wheels are not there. Like if there is no TPMSs ID transmited along with the pressure it does not see any problem?

I think the computer is recognizing the wheels in the garage when you turn the truck on in the garage. If you are away from the other wheels long enough, the light will come on. The computer will consider the missing sensors to be a problem and eventually turn on the light.
 
yup, u need to drive about 100 miles or 1 hr for the light to come on, then when /if it does, it will reset when u park near them at night. just make sure to keep the spare & ones in the garage aired up.

Where did you find steel wheels?
 
I don't think I drove more then 100 miles at a time since I have installed wheels. But it is the same in garage, at work etc. We'll see if longer trip turns it on....So far I am pleasantly surprised)))

Local tire shop (Tire Depot) supplied steel wheels.

Stealership wanted 90 bucks for 17" black rim. In tire shop I got them for 70 each. Overall savings over dealler were $500 for the package.

And my vehicle is black. Black (even steel) rims look quite badass for winter:driving:
 
Everyone is correct, the truck is still finding the wheels close to the truck, when you go far enough the light will come on. You can search and find a solution to this if you want to disable tpms in the winter when you run these wheels. Some deal with the light some disable the system.
 
Hmm. I have the steelies put on this w/e with the OEM's stored 7kms away. The TPMS light has not turned on. Will it turn on after 100km?
 
It's been a week already since my light stays off. I don't think I did 100 km at a time though. But I do not think that TPMSs so re****ed that it needs 100 km run before it realize that you are in danger (unknown pressure in one or more wheels). I still hope Tire pressure ECU is somewhat smart enough not to bother driver if wheels are not there. May be geniuse-programmer wrote the program for ECU with sertain pattern for missing wheels. Let's keep each other posted.
 
ur still parking near them at night , right? it resets each time. so it may never come on unless the spare or others in the garage get low on air, or u take a long road trip. short trips may not turn it on. the 100 mile thing is not exact, it can sometimes take less or more, it also will not immediately come on when a tire gets 1 or so psi under recommended pressure. the longest ive gone is 2 years with no light until a tire in the garage or the spare got low. funny, most guys complain about it coming on not the opposite. u want to check if the system works, go to the garage & let out about 25% of air out of a tire. if u need/want tpms in ur winter tires, get an aftermarket setup.

Yeh, wheels are still around at night but not very close. Something like 20-25 ft. away from the vehicle. And I am not worried about the light not coming on, just would like to understand the case.

Is there any feedback from doberman_baby? Looks like there is a similar situation there.

The light will not come on unless you drive for a certain amount of time. I'm not sure of the exact amount, approx 45 minutes. What happens is eventually the TPMS ECU does not receive a signal and trips the failsafe.

The reason some are able to travel many miles away from the stored wheels is that the system "clock" resets every time the vehicle is shut off.

Mine just came on tonight. My OEM tires are stored 7kms away at parent's garage. Will the light turn off, once I am in my parent's garage? Does it have to be re-programed once I install the OEM tires again next April?
 
it should. when u switch back next april , they wont need to be reprogrammed but reset. -- make sure they are the correct pressure, put them on, it may take a few minutes/miles of driving before the light goes off, if it doesnt, then u have a bad sensor. this is an on/off mod if u need it. TPMS disable, I hope - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum
 
Anybody here with a 4th Gen Limited have winter tires on steel wheels? Did you use 18" wheels or go with 17"?

I ask because it appears very hard to find 18" steel wheels around here, but 17" are quite easy.

Thanks for the advice. So what you are saying is that all I have to do next april is to slap the OEM back on and the system will reset itself?

The biggest steelies size from the dealers are the 17.
