TPMS Problems After New Wheels Installed

I just purchased a set of Black Rhino Rapid wheels for my 2019 Limited. We decided to install new TPMS sensors rather than dismount the old tires.

The dealer is having trouble getting the new TPMS sensors to work. The light flashes for one minute when the car is started and then stays on solid. The owner's manual states that non-factory wheels, and even some specific tires on factory wheels, can cause this. Has anyone had this problem, and where you able to resolve it?

when you say dealer, I assume you mean toyota dealer that installed OEM sensors? have they used a handheld tool to wake up the sensors and then manually print them to the ECU using techstream or a OBDII connection? when I do my tire swaps with my 2012, the dealer everytime would need to manually override the winter/summer sensors using techstream or OBDII connection. simply waking them up isn't enough. I ended up buying my own autel tool to do this since 3/4 times I would have to go back to the dealer and have them program them properly. maybe on newer 4runners they program or re-learn easier

unless your rim somehow blocks the radio frequency from reaching the ECU I don't see how rim/tire combos impact the TPMS, unless you are using aftermarket sensors

This was a local tire shop that I've been using for years. They've replaced TPMS sensors on my 2007 4Runner before and never had a problem.

That being said, the light did not come on today, so maybe it just needed a couple of days to figure it out.

I avoided this with my 2020 and installed Autel MX sensors and purchased the Autel 501 programmer, worked perfect, I copied the codes from factory sensors and uploaded into the Auto MX sensors then installed in wheels. When I traded 2020 for a 2024 4R I did the same thing and again no issues. Just remember tires have to be deflated to 10 psi or less to reprogram sensors.

The lights are back on today. I'm taking it back to the shop in a couple of hours. I'll ask them about switching to the Autel sensors.

Autel sensors in mine as well, not all sensors work with Toyotas post2010, alot of electronics have changed and become more specific.

You don't need the autel brand sensors. You just need to make sure they use their programmer to read the new sensors, then write them to the ecu properly.

I use my autel device but buy OEM sensors and program them to the ecu when I switch between summer/winter tires.

the other issue could be that a sensor could have broken off inside the tire during mounting, which would cause it not to read properly. i have done that once.

so this used to happen to me. sometimes the dealer would not re-learn the summer/winter tires properly. they would go around with their scan tool, the light would shut off, and then come back on after a day or so of driving or driving any distance above 20km or so. if the scan tool sees the sensors they are not broken, check with the shop that they have been programmed to work on toyota frequency if they are not OEM. if the above two points have been checked program to ECU via the OBDII cable and write them manually. waking up the sensors with the scan tool is not sufficient (at least not for me - they need to be manually written but I also have a 2012 and not sure how the newer 4runners operate)

They did use Autel sensors, but I'm not sure they were the MX model. They were unfamiliar with the clone feature.

They said perhaps I parked to close to the old wheels and the computer reconnected to them. I'll try moving the old ones further away before I pull all the way into the driveway tonight. They were about 20' away, which they said should have been far enough, but it's worth a try.

3 full days now with no issues. I don't know if they just finally got it right or if moving the old wheels further away was the solution.
