TPMS sensors

Sorry if this has been covered before, but on MY end, the search function seems broke and Google - with all it's magic and power - doesn't seem to dredge up specifically what I'm looking for. I'll do a search and all I get is "LOADING" in the top left corner of the results script.

Anyway, when swapping from OEM to aftermarket wheels, do the new TPMS sensors have to be 'mated' to the vehicle? Google DID return a T4R result for the 5th Gens and it looks like they can ghost the OEM units WITH the vehicle there, but what about the 4th Gens? I was planning on just dropping the batch off at the shop for mounting, but if they need the Runner for emulation, I might need to find some extra time in my schedule for watching bad lobby TV. ;)

I was thinking about just using the old ones, but they're a little over 10 years old now...not sure they'd survive the transplant and I might just keep the old W/T's for grins. (I've toyed with getting a 5th Gen)

Get a second opinion but if your clone the ID of your old sensors then I think Toyota will simply see the ID and keep on doing what it always did.

If you put new IDs in, ( 8 wheels / 8 IDs - old and new sets ) I -think- Toyota will only see 4 IDs so you would need to connect to your vehicle and enter the new IDs. Which also clears out the old IDs..

So that set of tires you may keep would need to be re-entered if you put them back on.

But if you clone... 8 wheels / 4 IDs... I don't think Toyota looks any closer than that. If it sees the ID it's good to go.

Again get a second opinion, but I believe that's how Toyota works.

So you still need to read your current IDs so the shop can clone. Or get them to read them before you drive off.
 
Not to be critical... but why bother? Do you need/want them? Routine visual inspection and any decent tire pressure gauge could save you a lot of money you could use for other mods :) Just my $.02 tho ...

I suppose not...just need to disable the light. It'll drive my OCD nuts. ;)
 
I disabled mine, no big deal. You just ground a wire under the pass side kick panel if I remember right. Tutorial should be easy to find on here.

my tpms is 12 years old now. still good.

Yes, you have to mate them. Just go to any tire shop and have them do it for you. It is pretty quick.
 
Thanks! I'm gonna wait and see if there's any 'desperate for revenue' pre-Christmas sales or after Christmas sales on wheels before I pull the trigger and disable the TPMS once mounted.
 
I just disabled mine. I have a second set of wheels that I run at low pressure so I'll just be checking my tire pressure on occasion just like the old days.

It takes at the most 10 minuets to disable and the go get a tire pressure gage and check once a month or so or just go to any tire shop and they do it for free.

just keep in mind, TPMS have batteries in them to make them work. these batteries are NOT replaceable so when they go bad the sensor must be replaced.

you can reuse the old sensors, and people often do, but at some point, the battery life will fail and you will need to install new ones. if you feel you need them then put new ones in, or of you dont mind them not working, then reuse the old ones and when they fail just do the jumper wire to disable TPMS
