TR4 V6 as a tow vehicle

Hi Does anyone have an experience they can share about using a current model T4R V6 to tow a travel trailer, say 4,000 to 5,000 lbs
Performance on flat land?
performance in the hills?
cornering?
braking?

Towed my civic about 5 hours with no problems. Gas mileage dropped about 4 mpg though, and up steep hills it would downshift. Changed tranny fluid right after.

I have a 5000 lb camper, I only towed it once, due to a bad alt. But I had no problems I had an electric brake controller, I would guess going up hills that would be a small problem. before I tow it again I will be installing a transmission cooler and changing the trans fluid, but I need to check on the trani fluid type, I read somewhere that you might need to use just toyota trans fluid, but I think that was on the newer 4Runners that have no dip stick, I drive a 2003 4x4 v6 sport edition, easily the best 4Runner I have had, out of about ten a few of each gen.:awais:

If you have the 5 speed trans (no dip stick, 05+) you will not need to change the fluid. It is a synthetic Toyota proprietary fluid (WS type). Depending on the length of the trailer (25' or less) you should be OK with a trans cooler, brake controller, and a WD hitch. Do a search and you will find all the info you need. RV.net is a great source for additional info.

You do not need a transmission cooler pulling anything under 5,000 lbs according to Toyota.
If Toyota felt it needed the tranny cooler, they would definately include it. Trust Toyota.
