I was thinking the same thing as you a couple months ago. I test-drove a V6 and man its just not the same. I've decided to stop driving like an ******* and I've been getting 16.5 MPGs lately and thats with a 4WD V8 and 275s. Maybe change your driving style?

You ever think that the caliper maybe has a lot to do with you gas mileage??

Edit: why the hell would you trade for one with a hundred thousand more miles if you're trying to avoid problems? Was your post serious and thought out at all?
 
I'd say you're insane if you go through with that trade...

Sorry if I sound like a d***, but there's no way you should do that for like 2 mpg and a couple ''goodies''. I wont even bother with saying all the reasons why.
 
You have something wrong or are driving bad if you are getting that bad of mileage. If it is the driving style then the mpg will not improve with the v6. Why would you trade for a vehicle with 100k more miles. Just spend a little and fix what needs fixed on your 03. Why do you think an 04 with 100k more miles would have less problems. Mine is an 03 and I just take care of the little things when they come up It is 9 years old, you can not expect it to be a good as a new vehicle.
 
Just got home from looking at it and well no frozen calipers, no squeaky bushings and most of all, no timing belt that has to be changed.

We'll see what the bank says. I'm thinking if the bank says no then ill look for the sane year and engine but 4WD
 
i would look and trade it with '06 and up.. i had an '05 limited and traded it for a '06 limited.. because i wanted the led tails and projector headlights.. the bigger fender flares are a nice upgrade too.. just saying

Now on a serious note, I too think that is a bad idea. Buying a vehicle with 100k more miles just to get a few bells and whistles isn't a good idea. If you seriously want more gadgets then look for a sport or limited with less miles. Also If your getting 13mpg then either you drive like its stolen or you have a mechanical issue.
 
not worth it...its a no brainer.urs is 2wd so should be giving u better mileage..something is wrong with ur truck...search on cars.com and autotrader...if you r willing to travel...you will see lots of good trucks at good prices...am searching for an 04/05 model...and in my search i hv seen lots of good trucks in NY/VA/NJ/PA area...am just hampered by the fact that i cant go more than 50mile raduis from 21202...cos of my job...so i hv seen loads of good deals go by :)
 
So you're too lazy to do basic maintenance yet you want a truck with 160,000 miles on it? You're a real fart smeller you know that....best of luck to you in your terrible decision.

This really isn't worth responding to, but the one I have now was a ex fleet vehicle & wasn't taken care of & the 05 was thought in FL with a clean carfax (not really a good system) & I can get a better APR & less to finance for a lot less time. i also work on cars 8 hours a day for a living. Kiss my @$$

if you cant be bothered to change your frozen calipers and worn bushing then why are you working on other people cars in the first place? your sig says you want opinions on CAI as wel? haha they suck and are a waste of money unless you want 1 or 2 extra ponies in WOT applications.

tell me how you are managing to get 12mpg in your 03 v8 2wd 4Runner? this tells me IMO you havent done ANY maintanence on the engine at all. my 04 v8 AWD with 265/75/17 BFG T/A KO's still manages 17-20mpg on average.

Even driving like the sweetest little old lady you've ever seen, it will only do 14.6 (hand calcuated). Even before the whole frozen caliper, it wouldn't go higher than 15.5. There's a mech issue I know, where it is and how hard to find not one clue.

It doesn't stop there. It needs new shocks, bushings, caliper, brake pads, etc, etc, etc.

Lets see you come home after a 8 hour day, do more work, then get out at mid night to do work on my truck with almost no energy left? Ha.

in my line of work my days dont end at 8 hours, sometimes i go 24-36 hours without sleep. come home to a new born child and still make time to do maintanence and repairs to my vehicles, heck i even go to friends houses and work on their vehicles too.
 
If you don't like or trust your truck - I get that. However, I don't think getting into a truck with an extra 100k miles is a sound solution. Kinda the opposite actually.

If your MPG is that bad, I'd say start by figuring out if you're running rich. Start with the simple things like checking the color of your plugs. Figure out where all that gas is going. How's the exhaust smell?

I've been getting 18mpg in my 4wd v8. No way your truck should be that low on mpg.

OK? I'm 17 & don't have a kid (nor do I want one right now). I've gone 30+ hours without sleep and well its no fun. I'm going to look at it today but chances are I'm going to pass and look for something else.

Plugs are fine. Checked just about everything, changes the plugs with NGK's and did the wires for good measure, checked just bout everything possible and still to avail.
 
you should look into fixing your truck you have now, the only reason i would even consider getting rid of your truck if i was in your position is to get a 4x4 truck. if youre anything like i was at 17 years old you have a thirst for the off road but if youre a pavement pounder fix up your truck.

trading a v8 in on a v6 with more miles doesnt make sense just to save a little fuel and have less initial maintanence. things start to degrade rather quickly at high mileage. also consider yourself very lucky to be able to afford a truck as nice as a 2003 4Runner or have parents nice enough to buy you one. when i was 17 i had an 88' chevy w/t base model pick up.
