Trade in my 02 for the 14?

So Ive been looking @ the new 2014 4runner and im starting to get the itch... I'm on the verge of jumping into the deep end and trading in my 02 for that shiny new 2014....

the only problem is I got no reason to justify it to myself.... my 03 pulls my boat gracefully is still nicely equipped (Rims, Nav, Rear cam, sound) and shiny and with 126K miles....it costs me next nothing to nothing to own just gas + oil change and that's it.... I know I can still get decent $$$ for it...

What do you all think? stick with the 02 or go for the 14???

Personally, I love every generation of 4Runner but I HATE the 5th gens. I have friends with them and they just don't feel like a 4Runner. But that's just me.

Keep the 02

Keep the 02 and spend the money you would spend on the 2014 on other stuff...like a roof rack, fishing gear, etc.

With the high gunnels and choice of bottom paint, along with your location, I am guessing that is a 21ft Mako.

Having just pulled the same boat (19ft Hydro Sports) with both a 3rd and 5th gen 4runner this weekend, I felt my 3rd to have more torque right off the line. The 5th gen, needs to be reved up in the RPM band before moving it the boat with ease. Once over 40mph, the given width of the 5th probably helped with stabilization of the boat more so than when using my 4runner. However, neither one is close to having the pulling power of the 4th gen 4runner with the V8 in it.

I don't like the front end of the 2014 4runner. Predator anyone? That said, the refresh Toy gave the interior retains merit.

I'd say keep your 02 and buy another boat or a bigger one. Nonetheless the 2014 4runner purchase would be nice. Since I bought my 4runner in 06 I have bought 2 additional boats costing more than retail of a 2014 TE 4runner.

Little Cesar.... you def know your stuff. Thats a 1984 21 Mako. that is interesting that you say the 3rd gen to have more torque. I thought It would be a better towing experience all around since its got the 4.0 engine vs the 3.4 on the 3rd GENs

If you're comfortable money-wise and buying a new truck isn't going to negatively impact your financial situation, why not? The 5th gen is bigger, more powerful with better mpg...pretty much a completely different vehicle and better in every respect (specs-wise).

That being said, I probably wouldn't trade my 3rd gen for a 5th gen since I'd be paying a $30,000+ premium...and that to me is just nuts no matter what my funds are like. Do you specifically want the '14? I'm sure you can get brand new '13 for a lot less now that '14s are out.

The ONLY thing the newer 4Runners are better at is mileage, everything else they don't come close.
Don't like the looks of any of the 4Runners newer than the 02.

Personally if you got that much money burning a whole then take out your 3.4L and sell it then buy a new Turbo Diesel engine and put in it.
You then have a 3rd gen with a higher torque and better gas mileage than any of the above with a brand new engine.

It is just the feel of how the 5th gen pulls up grades and off stops in comparison to my 3rd with a boat behind it. Similar to comparing a CVT transmission vs a regular automatic. Both will get the job done, but approach getting it done differently. As said before the 4th gen v8 is the ultimate tower as far as 4runners go. I got a 1st gen Tundra that now sees 90% of my towing duties.

Best advice is to drive a 5th gen, then find someone who will let you hook the Mako up to theirs for a couple of miles for a test drive. Let us know how it turns out.

If I had $200 more a month wiggle room in my budget I'd totally sell my 2002 and get a 2014.

But I don't at the moment, so in a few years when I do, hopefully the 6th gen will be out with a V8 or other better power plant, or at least a 6th gear for highway driving.
