Trade my 97 for an 07 Ford Explorer? Even swap.

My meticulously maintained and modded 97 4Runner 2wd with 180k is my DD for my detailing business. I pull a 2500/3000# trailer everyday M-F. Next March my in laws intended on trading in their garage kept 07 Ford Explorer V6 2wd with only 82k. It's in virtually perfect shape. They offered it to me but I would definitely have to let them use my 97 as a trade in or sell it outright and offer them the $ I make from it. Wife's stipulations because we'd have too many vehicles at that point as we have two other definite keepers already. My truck is awesome, runs great, and is super recognizable for my business but I feel like from a logic and financial standpoint I'd be foolish not to do it. What would you guys do?

You could triple the miles on your Yota before it wears out. The same can't be said for the Exploder.

Here's what I would do. I would give him your 2wd Runner straight across for the Explorer. Then I would turn around and sell the piece of crap explorer for 6-8k to some soccer mom then immediately go buy another 3rd gen 4Runner but in 4WD this time.

Then you're all set and you won't even have to leave us to go join the Exploder forum. :cool:
 
Are you out of your Go# Da!n mind? They don't call them Exploders for nothing.

In all seriousness those years Explorers and Expeditions have awful electrical problems. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

In all seriousness, I'd probably make the trade depending on the condition of my 97.
But then I'd turn around and sell it and get another 3rd ten 4wd. That wouldn't go over well with the in-laws most likely though.

I'm a Ford fan, but those 02 through 09 years were pretty unreliable vehicles basically across the brand

Sorry [MENTION=115590]StreetCreeper[/MENTION] for the rant but here goes:
Yet again the conversation reverts to 4wd vs 2wd. Yet again I have to explain that I live in FLAT ASS NORTH FLORIDA AND HAVE NO NEED FOR 4wd. Its seems that everyone on this forum believes you must have a 4wd to belong. I've mentioned this numerous times but not everyone needs or wants a 4wd. I hate that mine is devalued in this forum because of that. I've stayed away from this forum for a few months because of this very same issue on some other thread that immediately made fun of a new member because his new truck was "nice but it's not a 4wd". To those that offered a true opinion about my situation I appreciate it. It just seems that after being a member here for so many years the 4wd thing has been beaten to death.

1) Garage or not, mileage on a Ford (or American cars really) is like Toyota dog years: so doing the math your 82,000 is closer to 180,000-210,000 on a decent 4Runner: seats starting to wear out, interior panels fading, engine is leaking somewhere and there is likely a major repair bill around the corner for a transmission or similar failure.

2) the idea that you'd even CONSIDER downgrading from a Toyota to a Ford sadly means you don't share our love for these rigs and means your foot is likely halfway out anyway...

3) in all seriousness it would be a bad move, and AT BEST a lateral one. I would be surprised if you didn't end up with a huge bowl of Regret Flakes and Disappointment Milk...

(Terrible analogy but it's early)

Search timing v6 explorer chain guide failure....plastic guides and a ridiculous amount of work to fix, not a straight forward front of engine sort of deal.

We sold a 99 explorer in decent shape and bought a 99 4Runner with nearly twice the miles and a couple grand extra and feel we ended up with a much better vehicle. Stupid numb to drive dumb exploder.
 
Thanks for the insight about this. No my foot is not halfway out the door. I truly want to keep the runner but also did not want to pass on something that could be beneficial to my family. After I posted this I did some further research on the explorer and agree, too many problem areas for me to swap even if the mileage is substantially less. Gladly the 4Runner stays. Thanks everyone.

I understand your feelings toward your 2WD 4Runner. That said, I never once devalued, spoke ill of or in any way 'made fun of' your truck or anyone else's 2WD 4Runner. Ever.

You specifically asked "what would you guys do?" So I told you exactly what I would do. If "I" had your 4Runner and was offered the deal you did — "I" would do exactly what I said above. Just the facts — no BS, no making fun of any person and no making fun of any truck — aside from the piece of crap Exporer of course. :D

180k on a 4Runner is nothing to me especially since yours is meticulously maintained. You know your truck, you know how to work on your truck, you know it's weaknesses and strengths and you have an entire army guys and gals on here to talk to about anything 4Runner related. From dumb old potheads like me to NASA engineers — everyone is here. For me, a big benefit to owning a 3rd gen Runner, is the forum and all its members.

Your right [MENTION=115590]StreetCreeper[/MENTION]. I blamed you for something specifically when it's not you and not necessarily what you meant. I was soured by the last incident a few months ago and took it out on you. Seems somehow certain questions or topics just seem to divert to that issue of 2wd VS 4wd. I'm just bummed for myself and all the many 2wd guys on this forum that love our trucks but somehow get bashed over one seemingly small difference. I do believe there are guys that regret not getting a 4wd. I am not and will never be one of them unless I move out of North FL. To the others here who feel they do need to belittle the non-4wd guys, just think of this post next time and maybe reconsider the need to do so.
 
Now that everyone has kissed and made up I will say I wouldn't do it. My parents have a 2004 mountaineer (basically the same thing) and they can't keep that A/C working to save their lives. They've had it "fixed" around 7 different times between 2-3 mechanics. Also the electrical problems are abundant. They do have the v8 with 220k on it but it won't last much longer. Also the rear end is CRAZY noisy and it's been looked at more than once. My 4Runner 5 years older and same mileage works better than theirs does and they're the original owner and took really good care of it and I am the 3rd owner and the last abib didn't take care of crap on it.

That's not an even trade. From experience, these things are crap. For a German engine, that V6 is a harsh pile of crap. Timing chain issues are not uncommon, but as long as the oil was changed they aren't the worst. Forget about the transmissions.

I don't think the V8 one is too bad(aside from that crappy transmission), but I still wouldn't trade a 4Runner for it.
 
They haven't been nicknamed the ford exploder for nothing. Those transmissions pop like it's going out of style

I mean, a car that is 10 years newer could be tempting.


That being said, we sold our 2011 Jeep Patriot to get a 2001 4runner. I had to convince my wife that a newer car isn't a better car.
