Trade the Mazda for a 96 4runner? HELP

Ok, I have a Mazda6, wagon. 2004, 102,000 miles on it. Awesome condition. Does terrible in the infrequent snow and massive rain we get here in the Mt Hood, area. I drive down the mountain and all over Portland, every work day. I have snow or heavy rain on the mountain then have light rain or dry payment in Portland. I hydroplane all over in the Mazda, and have tried several tires. I can't put snow tires on, due to being in town, everyday. I want to do snow sports on the mountain, but work in Portland.

So, I came across a beautiful, looks brand new, 1996 4runner, with 200,000 miles on it. Full maintenance records, all done as required. Drove great. Have not had it checked out, yet.

The dealer said he'd trade my car; for the 4runner and I would have to put in $2000.00. He is low-balling my trade-n value and high-balling the 4runner's.

My fears........ even if they come down on price....... 200,000 miles and 15 years old for my 7 years old car that has 102,000; and much more plush. I am so worried, the minute I get the rig, I will have to replace an engine or something, huge.

Any thoughts?

Check the carfax on the toyota, ask for service records if they have any, and I doubt you'd have to replace the engine drive it you'll see if theres anything wrong with it. When I was buying mine with 99k miles I was worried too but after driving it she ran perfect for being a '98 so I bought it and...

If it was me I would not even consider giving the mazda for a '96 with 200k

which reminds me of a story back when I had my 2000 Audi S4 with 88k miles, I was looking at an Xterra (2003) with 99k miles and the guy said my car +3000$ cash and I could have the X, I just laughed and walked away.

trading straight across wouldnt be fair, they want too much for their runner sorry, its like you say a 96 with 200,000... i picked mine up its a 97 with 207 on it 9 months ago for $5500, and it had some extras, ski rack, grille guard nice 17 alloy rims, driving and for lights, air bags and 7pin trailer connector(both for towing) and it was the second owner will the first owner being a dealer service writter... keep looking you can find one for less -i live in the portland metro area as well, vancouver

You know how it is, when everyday you drive by the rig, and want it so bad............ One owner, no wrecks, great service records.......... beautiful, inside and out. Just way too much money!

Though, I do agree on getting rid of the Mazda. Mazda is Ford's guinea pig. Like all Fords, it will likely fall apart (if it hasnt begun doing so already)

I'd consider a straight across trade, but even that's pushing it. If it was a 99+, I'd definitely do it.

Yeah I got a 99 limited 2 owners with 120k for $5000 2 months ago, I would say $9000 for a 96 with 200k is a terrible deal. I wouldn't say a straight trade is fair on your end either, keep shopping you'll find something better and less expensive. I would probably be offended by their offer of you paying $2000 in addition to trading in the vehicle and would have walked out without another word.

That "dealer" is a crook sounds to me.

I would say your best bet by far is to sell the Mazda yourself, then go buy a 4 runner with CASH in hand and preferably from a private party if possible.

$9000 sounds rather stiff for a 96 with 200K to me.

I got a 2002 SE with 157K with all maintenance records going back to 2004 that was about 3" thick in a folder, with brand new tires & rims, 3" OME lift & coils & shocks about 2 years old, front brush guard & lights and got from a private party for $7,700.00.
All I had to do was add sliders and do a total fluid change.

That was on the East Coast which seem to me to be a bit "higher" in price than in your area.
In fact I was thinking of flying to Bend Oregon to buy one because I was seeing better deals there than here in NC.

I would check ALL OVER on Craigslist, Autotrader etc not just in your immediate area. I found mine 180 miles away.

The value of your Mazda should be somewhere around $8,000.

For $8K you should be able to do pretty good getting a 4Runner and if you were willing to add 2K to that then 10K should get you something very nice, A LOT better than a 96' with 200K.

ok i think that something that needs to be looked at also id the demographic, i know a lot of us got good or great deals on our rigs and we also probably see other people getting better deals too, but are we looking at where they are from compared to you? these trucks(as with any vehicle) are only worth what the market will bear, meaning sure kkb or other sorces may say its worth this, but in actuality its not, i might be higher or lower, if there is surplus of them in one area the market might tend to be lower than where there arent so many, also if they are more popular in an area, an or the cost of living or economics are higher, the price will be higher(they are quite popular here in the PNW, and we dont have the cheapest cost of living either), but again $9k for a 96 with 200k on it is absurd. just some food for though fwiw

Feeling much better about passing on the 4runner

After reading all of your postings, I feel much better about not grabbing at that 1996. Looks like I should just wait, and keep looking.

For 9k you can find a really nice 3rd gen. I'd say about a 99-02 Limited with maybe less than 150k. I am very glad to see that you didn't let that dealer didn't rip you off like they clearly intended to.

I bought my 99 with 190K on it for $5500. Super well maintained, no rust and clean as you can get. Sell the Mazda yourself (wagon should be easy to sell, I just sold my 528i wagon.) go buy a 4Runner with cash in hand, they're getting cheap because of gas prices too.
