Trade Up???

All three of our trucks are paid off both 4th gens and the Sequoia (Pending sale). Now the wife wants a new vehicle so we are thinking about trading in one of the 4runners in on a new T4R. I know the dealer is going to hose me on my trade, I have made my peace with that. Problem is I am not wanting to get into a new car payment....anyone think trading both 4th gens in and paying some cash for a new runner would be worth it. I have a little 325iX to drive, but i am having trouble letting go of my trucks.

Just panning for advise or WWJD......

thanks

Is there anything wrong with your current 4Runners? I mean the 4th to 5th gen isn't a real huge jump in comfort like it was from 3rd to 4th, And your going to dump 2 working vehicles that are past their major depreciation point and modded to pay $30k+ for a new car that will be worth $5k less in a year or 2. I just dont see the logic in this unless there is something wrong or high miles with your current ones.

I also dont want a car payment, but If she is set on getting a new car i would urge you to sell 1 of your 4th gens now via private party, then wait a couple months or a year, and find a 5th gen that has like 40k-50k miles on it, and already pretty far into its initial drop in depreciation. But thats just me, but I'm only 19 so my logic could be flawed.

Good luck with the decision.

I've thrown the same idea around a few times before and have always figured keeping my two older trucks, rather than one nicer new one was a better idea for us. Now I didn't have a 325ix to drive after, I would've had to find a real beater so your story may be a bit different.

And depends on what your plans are, your 4th gens are nicely modded for wheeling as they are, and I know if I spent the cash for a new 5th gen it'd be a loooong time before I started to wheel it. Maybe your ideas are different there but that could be a thought too.

Pretty good logic for 19. I agree 100%, I'm 30 (if that matters) and I have gone through the whole new truck phase and know that it's not worth it. You're throwing money away for a truck that's a few years newer. I get the feeling that you don't really want to buy a new truck but your wife is set on a new T4R. If you must have the new T4R I would take Johns advice, sell one or both of your 4th gen T4R private party and have the cash ready to put down on the new T4R. That way you only finance a small percentage of the sticker price if any (or go pre-owned and save a little more money).

that is a very good point, we take our 4runners on a few wheelign trips year and it would be hard to do in a new one. Not to mention, we start over on the mods.... i guess i will just have to talk the wife into loveing her 4runner....again...she mostly wants teh 3rd row seats and warranty

Excellent advice!

If she wants 3rd row, then you are likely going to have to get Limited version, right? This means even more investment in mods to get it up higher, change out low hanging bumpers, no KDSS (a great off-road feature), no terrain response thingy (may help your wife off-road better), etc.. In other words, you will likely have to spend even more money than you did before when you had the 4th gens to get it to the same level. The 5th gen Limited is more mall-friendly than previous 4runner versions.

You want to scare her back into her 4runner??? Tell her she either likes her current 4runner or else she gets a Sienna minivan! :D

lol.....seinna or current runner...nice

I showed her today at luch what she would be giving up and I think for now I may be winning....but she decided she like the Sequoia more....but that is way to far out on price, so i m safe there...

The ads show up in the last post on the page. If you look at all the other threads this is what has been going on for several weeks. It also seems the ads are some how inteligent, based on the thread it will show a diferent ad, at the top of the screen and in the last post.

No, tell her Prius or current 4runner, lol.

I'm also in agreement with JohnsD90. No way would I get rid of two very nice mod'd trucks for one slightly nicer new one AND a new car payment.

we went to the dealer last night and looked at a 2010 T4R and a RX350 AWD both used..

I was offered roughly 6500 per 4Runner as trade leaving me with about a 20K bill after TTL.

It does not matter what the wife wants at that point, fact is, if I had 20k I could make out 4th gen runners new...deal is off....I will keep what I have or just buy here something later and keep the runner as a toy

How many miles are on the 4runners? You would be better off putting them back to stock and then selling your bumpers etc. They probably gave you less because of the mods. It is easier for them to sell a stock 4runner.

Re:

You and the wife can decide on the replacement car/SUV together but the biggest red flag I see here is the trade in for both 4runners and still paying 20k for the new vehicle. 20k to payoff and Mods mind you. Because let's face it, when you get the new vehicle, err 4runner you are going to WANT/NEED to mod it. I will say this: I hated the 3rd row seating design in the 4th Gen, however the 5th Gen they did a great job making it lay flat if that helps at all.

You know more than anyone here how much your 4runners are worth and what they could be sold via private party sale. Private party sale would net you one vehicle sold for the better price than the dealership's offer to buy both 4runners from you. Sell two 4runner's and have a great down payment and leftover for mods, or sell one and not need to mod. I guess what I'm trying to focus on here is the first step, of three. The way it was presented seemed like you were trying to do steps two, and three, before making a better first step.

I added 3rd row (split fold and tumble) to one of my 3rd gens...

I really like the 5th gen, I just agree with you on the value of my runners.
I thought I would get offered around 10K each on the runners and leave me with under 10K to finance. I was way off.

I will keep the trucks for now, and perhaps post them on here for sale if i decide to go forward again.

Also worth mentioning... i asked about the value with the mods, and the guy gave me the whole "that actually lowers the value" so I told him I have all the factory parts and I would convert it back to stock, would take me about one day. they guy was like..let me go ask.........came back and said, the sales manager told me the price is for as is only and I can not remove change anything...

FYI this is not the dealer I do parts with, this is another dealer that had the vehicles I wanted...

I agree with Johns D90. I always want to trade up my cars but it just doesn't make sense with the 4R, it runs well, miles are fine, etc. I don't want the payment either, or having to put down extra $.
