No good deed goes unpunished. The tale of woe started when I foolishly traded in my wife's 2011 Honda Pilot for a 2014 Acura RDX as a surprise for her birthday.
The Pilot was beat to hell for only being 3 years old. It was scraped on both sides (wide SUV in a narrow downtown underground parking lot), all the wheels had curb rash, white paint was spilled in the cargo bay and bumper, mysterious stains everywhere (kids) and it had a ding on the CarFax report due to my wife taking out her building gate with the driver side of the SUV (when the Pilot was only 4 weeks old).
I bring home the RDX. She hates it due to the fact that we now have a $16K note on it (Pilot was paid off) and no third row. She wants to trade it in for something with a third row. She is obsessive over the 3rd row for the next month. THIRD ROW!!! (which we never really used in the past).
I break down and see how much I can get for the 4Runner. It's a 2011 SR5 RWD with 65K miles (some goodies like a 2" lift / aftermarket wheels and tires). Lo and behold $24K trade in value (I think I bought it for $31K drive out). I trade my beloved 4Runner for the 2014 Acura MDX. I agree to drive the RDX (total chick car) for a while.
True I could have traded in the RDX but I would have lost $3-4K on a new car. It was a hard decision but I had suck it up and land on the grenade. When I gave the 4Runner keys over to the dealer, it felt like someone just died. I never been emotionally attached to a vehicle before. It was a faithful friend who never complained and always got the job done. My plan is to drive the RDX for a while (whatever that means) and trade it in on the next generation 4Runner (this time Trail edition). I hope the next gen 4Runner won't be a crossover unibody fake SUV. RDX is nice but it has no soul. It's an appliance with leather interior. I will never surprise my wife ever again with a new vehicle. Ever.
