I have 18600 on my sport 05 4x4 and want to trade it in for the 06 4x4 sport shadow mica. A dealer just quoted me a price of 28,800 with rebate. What would you guys do in this situation?
How much would you try to get for a trade in?

I have a 2003 v8 4runner and i would not trade it on anything but a new body style. You will lose so much on trading it in so early.

I did this with my Lexus ES330 - 2005 model. I got rid of it because it was the biggest POS in the history of cars. Had the acceleration lag issue, where it almost killed my wife. I got rid of that crapiola because it was dangerous, and i lost money on that deal. However, I would never do it unless it was something serious.

Honestly, you are taking a huge hit by doing that. It all depends how important the 2006 upgrades are to you. Is that $28,800 for a V6 or V8 model? In addition, what are they offering you for the 2005?

Are both engines the same, V6 for V6? What's the net cost to you out the door? That's the amount you should be interested in and use for comparison to other dealers.

I did a similar trade because I wanted to switch from my 2004 V6 SR5 to a 2005 Sport V8. I haven't been sorry. Mileage difference has been 1-2 mpg less.

* I traded it in on the end of Nov/05 for a 06 Sport with 0 miles.
* The 05 has 9,800 miles with normal tear and wear. Look new!
* The 06 sticker shown MSRP @ $35,7xx.
* I paid $5600 OTD with the trade-in.
* The dealer later mailed me a check $119 Dollars (Left over from tag transfer) along with 3 free oil change coupon and 1 fill-up gas coupon. The gift was a result of filling out a customer survey.
* Finnal total OTD is: $5481

This is almost exactly what I would be looking at. It would be a V6 for a V6. The only thing that sucks is that I may have to pay the sales tax again,

Sales tax should be minimal - only on the difference between the trade in and the new one - if he is trying to charge you the entire amount, he is totally ripping you off.

That depends upon the state or locality in which the person resides. Here in VA, you pay the full sales tax on the price of the new vehicle -- even if you are leasing and only using 'part' of its value and will never own it.

If that is not bad enough, they'll charge full sales tax to the person who buys your used trade-in AND you must pay full sales tax again if you buy out a vehicle at the end of the lease.

So much for living in a communistwealth state, huh?

Some places, most VA localities included, also assess a levy every year you own the vehicle. It is known as 'personal property tax' -- for which you must also purchase a sticker from your county, town or city of residence -- in order to prove to the local constabulary that you have paid the tax. You can be ticketed for failing to display a tax decal if your jurisdiction requires one. (It makes it fun for the cops, as some places don't require the decal and others do.)

Personal property taxes vary from 3% to 5% of book value, depending upon where in the state you reside. There is currently a partial rebate on the tax, however, that varies with the value of the vehicle (if it is under $20,000).......although our politicians are working on ways to eliminate it and end up charging us even more taxes. Vehicles valued at less than one thousand dollars are exempt from the personal property tax, but you still have to buy the $25 sticker that proves you paid the tax that you never owed.

This is one of those onerous taxes that it assessed at the county or city level, so our state politicians can claim that VA is a "low tax" state. Yeah, right.....compared to MA, NY, NJ or maybe CA.

P.S. The personal property tax on my '05 4Runner was a little less than $500 - after the partial rebate! That was in addition to the sales tax of about $870 which was paid at the beginning of the lease (rolled into the payment, though). The personal property tax is billed to you every year and is not included in your monthly payment. The only good thing is that it does go down each year as your car's value decreases. Mine will be about $375 to $450 in 2006. The bills go out in late April, so there goes my 2005 tax refund. Doh!

...Let me clarify a little more.
1. I traded-in a 05 Sport V6 for a 06 Sport V8
2. You don't have to pay full sale tax for the new vehicle. You're expected to pay ONLY taxable amount of the difference between your trade and the vehicle that you're interested. So, the best way to avoid confusion is to deal as OTD ballpack.
3. Here in Florida each county has its own sale tax bracket, such as: 6%, 6.5% or 7%. Regardless where you purchase your vehicle. You're required to pay the sale tax base on the county tax bracket where you're residing.
4. TIPS: You've the right to remove any removable add-on accessories from your trade even after the deal has been set and you forgot to mention. Such as: all weather floor mats. cargo mat, exhaust tip, hood deflector, seat covers, rear step bar...etc. In my case the saleman even helped me to remove the accessories right in their packing lot.

That is an excellent tip! When I traded my 2003 Sport for my 2005 Limited, I removed all of the accessories at the dealer parking lot as well. The only things I left were the sport bumper and all weather mats because they were worn. Don't be embarassed to do that! :

Got my personal property tax bill in the mail two days ago:
2018 4Runner $1,150.000 to be paid by June base on a $36K valued vehicle. That fee is with a discount of $400.
Renew registration for two years is about $80
To register when purchased new - $2100.

It basically cost about $100 a month to drive the 4Runner on these crappy roads in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

That is horrible and there is nothing you can do about it!
