Hi all I am new here. I was wondering if the trail edition has better skid plates and off road goodies than the other 4runner models?

Also anyone have a picture of the TE skid plates so I know what I am looking for when I go shopping?

Do they come with anything like rock sliders?

TE also has a rear locker, multi-terrain select (or something like that), and crawl control. No stock sliders.

You can tell a TE apart from the other models because of the different front and rear bumpers and black trim. When you sit inside the TE will have two dials and the locker button up by the sunroof control.

no OEM rock sliders, but aftermarket is better anyway: Shrockworks, BudBuilt...

Trail Edition has different front and rear panel trim for slightly better stock approach and departure angles. Trail-only "off-road goodies" include rear locker, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control. KDSS is also only available on the Trail Edition, though that's not exactly off-road specific. (seems weird to write it, but there it is.) i think the stock Trail wheels are 1/2" wider than the SR5 too.

hmmm, what else? flat black sideview mirrors (no integrated turn signals or puddle lamps), water-resistant seat trim, Optitron instrumentation, "smoked" headlights, less chrome than other model trims...
 
Hood scoop

The easiest and quickest way to tell the TE from the SR5 and LE is that it has a hood scoop. The SR5 and LE don't come with a hood scoop.

I read the first post expecting the normal responses of:

"It's called Trail for a reason, of course it's better off-road"

I noticed this gathering data about other vehicles, like the Tundra and the Ram forums. People are much less judgmental here, and more respectful of new arrivals. The other forums seem to only have two kinds of people: low IQ 17 year olds building bro-dozers and uppity liberal mall-by-four types.

Oh, and OP: We bought our TE because it had a more water-resistant interior fabric, and because with KDSS, you get much better on-road handling without losing off-road wheel articulation. I only recently discovered the wife likes vehicles with hood scoops.

My surprise came from the fact that I have seen quite a few threads where a new member asks frequent questions and are quickly attacked for not having researched first. Then randomly someone will ask what a trail is and get non-judgmental responses. It's almost bi-polar...

I think more people are enamored by the trail. If it was worded differently and more focused on the SR5, it would have been :flamethrwoer2:

Thank you all for the info. I did a lot of research before I posted these questions. I knew they all come with skid plates but nothing I saw specified that the trail had and additional one for the tank and one review I read said it came with rock sliders but I could not find that on the toyota website. And other than the kdss option $1750 and the hood scoop and maybe the cloth seats it seemed similiar to the SR5 4WD. The X-REAS suspension on the limited seems like the same thing as KDSS? So I was getting more confused the more I read. So what better place to ask dumb questions and expect to get good answers? Thanks!

I am a land surveyor, and even though I live in the flat land of florida I still needed something that can get me into some pretty heavy off road stuff on occasion but still carry my family around when needed. Also needed decent cargo space for my equipment.

So that being said, I am now the proud owner of a 2013 Trail, salsa red pearl. (believe it or not, the TE is practically non existent in this state!)

Welcome to the Trail Edition club, it is a great vehicle for hauling around my work equipment and still small enough to get around almost anywhere.

I love the KDSS and it was one of the main reasons for my decision to buy the TE, I also like the fact that it is fairly plain and simple with out a bunch of chrome and bells and whistles.

I think Toyota's website lists some of the big things that separate the Trail from the other models... KDSS is not available on the SR5, Rear Locker, Crawl Control, Terrain Select, etc.

That said it takes little effort to either answer the questions which is what happened here, or to move on... I'm glad with the response you got just a little surprised as I have seen other people get rocked for asking basic questions.

Our TE loves Florida. Especially Ocala.

X-REAS and KDSS are not the same. X-REAS works on the shocks. KDSS controls the sway bars. The Lexus LX, GX, and US-market Toyota Land Cruisers have both. The cloth seats are pretty different from the SR5 trim, other than both being available in black.

First thing you should do with your TE is get decent all-terrain tires. The stock Bridgestone or Dunlops have really soft sidewalls, which cut up pretty easily. I recommend Nitto TerraGrapplers, but this is personal preference more than anything.

If the nose-dive bothers you (it may not, since you'll be hauling stuff around in the back most of the time), 400 dollars' worth of Bilstein 5100's will make that go away and steady the ride out a lot.

Wow, Ocala is just down the road. I live in Gainesville. I would love to learn more about my 4runners off-road capabilities and learn how to use them effectively.

Do you go to Ocala National forest or something?
