Trail Gear newly introduced Tacoma bumper

It looks like Trailgear recently introduced a front bumper for Tacoma's. I called and asked if it would work on the 4runner and they couldnt gaurantee it, but said its a good possibility.

I stopped by a local shop who is a dealer for Trailgear and saw a 1st gen 4runner bumper in stock. Looks pretty nice, especially for the price of $400 and that includes shipping.

Hmmm....

Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts

Those who have had their bumpers off should review the install instruction pictures to see if it looks like it would fit.

my Rock sliders are plenty good in quality and they are Trail-gear, yeah, they are cheaper, but why pay more for DOM when HREW is more than sufficient for Sliders and bumpers??

and the fact that they dont have kickouts is in my opinion better.

Yes, all TG stuff is made in China for dirt cheap. Some is shabby quality and some stuff is actually build pretty solid (like my old sliders, although their design was a joke). I'm all about saving $$ especially with the current economy, but I am also willing to spend a reasonable amount more if I know it's keeping American business' doors open. CBI, Addicted Off Road, and Savage are a few examples of the small guy making it in these ridiculous times. Not to mention their products are better made and better designed than TG's are. Don't go cheapo, you'll regret it later and it'll cost you more in the long run.

Normally sliders aren't slammers, but you never know when or where you will slam them and when it happens, I'll take seamless DOM. I slammed almost the entire weight of my truck down on just a corner of one of my sliders a couple weeks ago and everybody thought I had torn it off my frame or at least broke a weld or 2, but there wasn't even a dent.

Why do you think no kickouts is better? Looks-wise I could see maybe, but my KOs protect my doors way better than no KOs. And if you angle the slider good, I've never had them hang up on anything. Just wondering your thoughts?

Ive had the full weight of my Runner on my sliders, but I havent really SLAMMED down on mine yet. Im confident in the sliders (but not my welds) in that situation. Ive been told by VERY reputable sources that you only need DOM for exos, that bumpers and sliders are plenty fine with HREW. I do plan on getting a gusset kit, cutting the sliders off and then rewelding them on with the gussets. but the actual sliders and the trailgear welds Im confident could take any hit I could put on it.
As far as the Kickouts, I guess I havent seen a situation where I thought the kickouts would help me and not get in my way in tight places. For me, it seems like its a styling thing that companies charge more for cuz they have more bends...
 
Wow, no love for Trailgear huh?

I forgot to mention that they are coming out with their Taco SAS kit before Christmas. Stocking stuffer...

Anyhow, I figured the Trailgear just gives people another bumper option to our limited selection. The same shop said that they would build me a custom bumper similar to the Allpro one (like that design best) for $400. Seems like a pretty good price to me.
 
Our bumpers are now completely American made. We build them to spec IN-HOUSE when ordered. Even our new winch mount is made in the USA.

Our new winch mount was redesigned with maximum strength in mind. We eliminated the hitch receiver since it was pretty much useless unless you ran synthetic rope. So, we added two 3/4" D-ring shackle mounts into the 1/2" side supports for recovery points instead. The mount is now laser cut from cold rolled steel. There is no finish scale at all on the new design which makes for a better, cleaner weld, and better finish.

At this point we pretty much eliminated the old style winch mounts from our line-up. We still offer them for now until we run out of winch mounts. But, we sell 10:1 of the new style over the old. Just an FYI, but the TG bumper will block your headlights. It has a 1.75" tube directly in front of the headlights. Unfortunately, I cannot sell that bumper in Colorado as its against the law to obstruct the headlights. Well, I could, but I would be doing the customer a dis-service by doing so. Most states have similar laws.

IMHO, there is nothing wrong with the quality of what Trail-Gear sells. Or, any of the other vendors either. Its all a matter of taste. Run what you want to run, its your rig. :cowboy:

:iagree: I had T.G. sliders and the only thing wrong with them was I ordered before I measured and what I got was way to short the 58" should not even be listed as a 3rd gen option but the welds and quality were good.

Ditto, I thought the same thing before I ordered mine, so I went and measured and sure enough, I got the 67" I think they are nearly perfect in length,

No kick out is a joke. with the design of the rear door you need it. And get dom sliders I looked at mine and i have a small dent in my kickout area but they are hrew. If your buying stuff to look like a style-cat go for it, but functionality is way more important.

Trail gear stuff is allright if your budget building. But If you even think about wheeling hard, or having a winch go with something solid that the maker believes in. Addicted offroad, 4xinnovations etc. Good Quality stuff. Trail gear is perfect for diff armor, and tow straps. Thats what i have bough from them and it seems to be okay

They dont have a front bumper for the 3rd gen 4runner, at least not the "low profile one" only 2nd gen and then tacomas...

Yea, but I imagine they can be made to fit. I was wondering if someone that has installed an aftermarket bumper could view Trailgears instructions and photos for the Tacoma to see if it looks like it could be bolted on.

yeah, I heard the bumper brackets were different... the best person to ask would be 88yota4x4, he did a taco front end conversion, then straight axle swap, if anyone knows about the difference between the taco and 4runner front ends its him
 
Cruising the web and noticed Trail Gear dropped their price on their low profile Taco bumper to $349! Thats pretty darn cheap, especially considering I could get it without the shipping charge.

I really like the Outdoor Logic one, but their is no way I can afford it. The Trail Gear is a good budget bumper option. Still unsure if it would bolt to the 4Runner without much hassle?

The Tacoma and 4runner mounting patterns are completely different, so it won't bolt on.
 
The Tacoma frame ends are a good 3" shorter, ending right at the front body mounts. The factory bumper on the Taco has brackets that slide into the frame end and incorporate the cross piece that the factory skid bolts to. So in order to mount it to the 4 Runner(or 98 Taco) you would have to cut your frame rails back and a few other modifications. Yes for some reason Toyota left the long frame ends on the 98 Taco similar to the 4Runner.
