Trail postings in Ontario

What does it mean when a road/trail is posted as "unassumed road" or "unmaintained road"? Does this mean that I can drive onto it with my car? or is it an atv trail?

it means exactly that.. "unmaintained road". not taken care of.. not checked on... drive at your own discretion.. fall into a deep hole and it's your problem... kind of thing.

I remember seeing "Unassumed roads" that do not have a posted speed limit.........I used to love launching my VW on 'em!!!

trails

just avoid trails with a ministry of natural resources sign
usually stating maximum vehicle weight allowance ( usually only a 4 wheeler and smaller qualifies (300kg or less) otherwise giver man!

Alrite, this is the perfect time to actually make some trail attempts.

I actually had a Jeep for a rental and put it to the trails and damn, the trails are perfect!

Hopefully it doesn't rain/snow soon. I really want to do this run again when I get my Runner back.

An "unassumed road" does not equal "no speed limit".

An unassumed road is a road that has been built due to some development but responsibility for maintenance hasn't been assumed by the municipality.

This usually happens in the context of streets in a new subdivision. The developer puts in the services (sewer/water/drains) and roads but the city/town/township doesn't "assume" responsibilty for them until an agreed to time in the development plan. Until then the developer is responsible for maintenance (ie. snow removal, pot holes.) With modern developments there are bonds posted to ensure the developer follows through and the city can assume the completed road or street.

The speed limit may not be posted but it's the default speed limit for the municipality (usually 50 Kmh.) There may be roads out there that towns/townships decide to keep open but not to maintain (ie. low use in winter) so they have to post them as "unmaintained". Likewise, there may be old roads the town/township never assumed responsibility for so those also need to be posted. These are also unmaintained (and turn into trails or paths) because the original developer is long gone. The signs are meant to warn you that the condition of the road is not the responsibility of the municipality and you use it at your own risk. The two edged sword is that it's still an officially "open" road so traffic laws (ie. speeding) can be enforced.

Barrie or GTA?

It's actually in Barrie, I found it while we were testing out the 2011 Toyota Highlander. My buddy does vehicle reviews, so we took that one and my 2011 Jeep.
