Trailer brake controller connector

I am needing to put on a brake controller for my horse trailer and I was reading last night that there is a connector under the dash already wired to my trailer connections. My manual talks about the plug that goes to the controller and I have searched on here and found pictures of what it is suppose to look like.

My question is, when you bought your 4R, did this connector to controller harness come with your vehicle already? Since I bought mine used, I do not have one as I have searched everywhere possible in the vehicle for it and was wondering if this is something that I need to get from the stealer or can I get it from any auto parts store?

The control harness would have been in your glove box...if it's not there whoever had your rig before probably took it out. I would check in the black box inside the glovebox and all the storage compartments in the back in case they stuck it in there. If not you can easily order the part online.

Pretty sure it's a toyota part...

no the wiring harness is under the dash, drivers kick panel area iirc, but you need to buy the correct harness for the controller you buy. only a few companies offer one when i was shopping. you need to tell them what make and year car you have and they should be able to find the correct harness for your brake controller. its not an OEM part.

I have an electric brake controller hooked up to my 04. The harness is located on the driver's side near the kick panel. I had a hard time locating it but once located instalation was a snap.

Thanks Java, I figured out that the harness was under the dash on the left side, at least that is what the manual says but what I was really wanting to know was about the connector that goes to the controller itself. I searched and found where someone found this, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/57462-found-glove-compartment-what.html in their glove box and this is the piece that I wanted to know about. I was hoping that I could just go to the autoparts store and get the connector (of course telling them what type of vehicle I have) instead of having to go to a dealer to get it.

From what I have gathered was that it probably was in the vehicle when it was new, but since I am the second owner, the first owner decided he did not want it and tossed it. Kind of like the second set of keys I had to buy since there was only one set when I bought it.

After a quick search here is the part you need...and I really think this is a Toyota specific part or an aftermarket specific for the Toyota like a previous poster mentioned.

Trailer Brake Controller Harness

You can install the trailer brake controller just by splicing but this is the "cleanest" way to do it. (just like you can install a stereo without the wiring harness but it's cleaner to buy it).

Yea, I checked everywhere. The owners manual is tucked up in the second compartment. I even checked the little side compartments in the rear cargo area. NODDA!!!

When I got my '03, the brake controller harness adapter came in a plastic bag, inside one of the small rear side storage compartments. If the previous owner lost it, you should be able to get one from Toyota, or at someplace that sells towing equipment (NAPA, AutoZone). As I recall it is a 4/5 wire harness. One end plugs into the connector near the left kick panel, and the wires splice into the harness from the brake controller.

I found the factory trailer brake harness with instrucions in a plastic bag for my used 2015 4Runner Limited inside the rear compartment holding the jack and tools for changing a tire.

It plugs into the white connector located above the parking brake.
