Trailer brake wiring

Does anyone have info on wiring electric brakes for trailers?

I have the 7pin connector under the bumper, but I would like to locate the other end so I can install the brake controller.

Does anyone have pictures of where people have mounted brake controllers?

I have an 2007 SR5 V6 that came with factory hitch and wiring.

Toyota delivered your vehicle with a white connector with 4 or 5 wires hanging out of it, probably in your glovebox. That wire is what connects to the drivers' area mounted brake controller.

You affix the bare ends of the wires to your brake controller and then plug it in near the drivers' side kick panel.

Of course when you're looking at the next one the plug will be empty because you haven't installed the contoller yet. NOTE: The P-brake is NOT set in the next photo. By setting the P-brake you'll be able to access the area easier.

As far as relocating your 7-wire hook up. The whole plug can be removed and it's on about a 1ft long pigtail where it plugs into the T4R's body wiring harness. If you wanted to relocate I would try, it may have enough wire. If it doesn't I'd unplug it and and take it to the bench where I could do quality, soldered splicing.

CJ - Thanks a million, that's what I needed.

I will be buying a camper and the camper dealer wanted $300 to install one. I've installed alarms and car stereos over the years and thought this shouldn't be that difficult..

Your quite welcome and you're totally set. Compared with a stereo or alarm this is super simple. The only thing you'll need is the paper that came with the wiring harness supplied by Toyota. Red does not necessarily equal red on the controller. If you're missing the sheet contained in the plastic bag with the harness let me know.

I'm confused.


My Toyota supplied harness that came with my '07 SR5 has:

1) Black- supplies fused battery power to the brake controller. It shuts the power off when the ignition goes off. If there's a short it blows a fuse instead of frying wires.

2) Green- supplies power when the parking lights or headlights are on. Not used with my brake controller. This would be used if the controller had internal illumination that automatically adjusted for night or day operations. This wire goes through a separate fuse from the vehicles lights, a good thing in the event of a short.

3) Green/Yellow tracer- supplies a 'brake applied' signal to the brake controller. Another way to say is the wire is 'hot' anytime the brake lights are on. This is what tells the controller to wake up and do something. This wire goes through a separate fuse from the vehicles lights, a good thing in the event of a short.

4) White/Black tracer- Grounding for the brake controller

5) Yellow- Electric Brake Output to trailer. This is the one that varies based on settings and with inertial reference controllers it adjusts the output based on how hard you're attempting to stop. This wire runs to the back of the T4R, through the plug and to the electric brakes.

Now, there's something lost in the Japanese to English language translation on the white sheet supplied with the harness. I have done a better job (IMHO)

All I did was hook up my controller by matching the wires on the controller to the list above. It works great.

That's one of the prime examples of what I was implying about the quality of the Japanese to English translation. :bash: The printed list of wires above is more of an 'in my own words' list. It's not a straight transcription of the sheet by any means... My printed sheet has the same terminology as yours.
