Trailer Hitch Rack

Anyone use them?

I want to free up some space in the back of the truck for the dog on road trips. Cabelas says not to use them if you have rear exiting exhaust, which the 4Runner does.

I'm not a big fan of the roof racks b/c of wind noise and increased drag and a trailer hitch mounted rack can be installed, removed and stored much easier....

i have a trailor hitch bike rack... not really the same thing, but ive never had any issues with the exhaust..

I have definitely melted stuff on my hitch rack with the rear exit exhaust. I will be putting an aluminum baking sheet on the bottom of it where the exhaust hits to make sure I dont do it again . I used layers of aluminum foil but the baking sheet will be waaay better and leave an air gap to cool it as well, kind of like an exhaust heat shield.

I just bought a new one this year. Gave the 10 year old one to a friend. this is what I bought this time.

mom and pop hand made ones, but great quality and they have an angled hitch bracket so it rides higher out of the way of the exhaust.

Then I bought the waterproof carrier from cabelas and you have a water tight area for more gear.
