trailer wiring

I just got a small trailer for hauling camping gear for this summer and my 86 didnt come with factory trailer wiring. I know I can buy a wiring kit from the parts store to wire in a 4 prong plug. Now my question is can i just direct wire a 7 prong plug. I would prefer that if possible and easier.

Unless your trailer has the separate brake and turn bulbs like your truck (which most trailers don't have), there is no point.

the trailer does have brakes. it has a 7 prong harness.

I gotta ask...

How heavy of a load to you intend to be pulling?
Trailer brakes aren't required until you get north of 3000 pounds I believe, and I'm not sure I'd want to be pulling that kind of weight behind an old T4R.

OK, I would not have thought a "small trailer for hauling camping gear" would have trailer brakes. You can wire your lights (L, R, Brake) to the 4 pins used for those and leave the other 3 unused (unless you have a brake controller).

i got the trailer with the brakes alredy on there. i wont be hauling a lot of weight 4runner aren't made for it. My original thought on this was to avoid having to but the expensive box to wire in a 4 prong plug.
