Trails in the NY/NJ area

I have been looking all over for good trails in the NY/NJ area. I really want to take my 4Runner on a real off-roading journey but can't find the right place to do it. The only place I found so far is a parking lot where there are deep holes and it is not paved. I got out of my truck and was very impressed with the wheel articulation. If anyone knows good off-roading trails in NY/NJ, please post them here. I get jealous when I read all of these good trails in the west!!

Catskills or the Pine barrens are your best bet. if you want to stay close to home.

Get some GOOD topo maps of the areas and you will find dashed lines marked '4WD' these are few and far between but you will be able to find additional trails off the mapped ones. I like the National Geographic maps. You can view them for free at some sites. If you have a gps you can download the maps into you will be better off.

There are local 4wd clubs who go on regular outings. Hook up with one and they will lead the way.

Wheeling in some parts of the catskills during hunting season (NY Oct 15-Dec 15) will make large armed men angy with you if you ride in the early morning/late afternoon. Also the NYDEC is a field during hunting season and you will have issues with them if you don't tread lightly (stay on the trail).

How about Rausch Creek Off-Road Park or Paragon Adventure Park, both in eastern PA. Both are excellent, with trails from mild to wild.

Not NY or NJ, but close.

You can't just wander into either park when you feel like it. You must go with a group, or show up when a group is going to be there and join them.

A group of us Toyota guys from the MD/VA/PA area are planning a trip to RC Sept. 17-19, for example.
