Camping/overlanding noob here, so I'm looking for guidance. My wife and I are planning to travel quite a bit in the next few years. How do I find information related to public access for camping? I see lots of threads where people seem to just camp in an open area, but there's got to be some consideration for the property owner, safety, etc. Please point me in the right direction. . .

Depends on where you are going - area. Best bet may be search at Amazon for book/map publication for off-roading camping for state or area. States usually publish state parks guide, BLM and NFS publish maps etc. for federal land and info is on-line also. Often restrictions on public land during fire season etc. so have to check with local offices for current info. Don't attempt to camp on private land without owners permission - which is usually a no-go.

For National Forest land, just go to your local HQ and get the MVUM (motor vehicle use map). It a very detailed map showing forest service roads and where dispersed camping is allowed. Best of all, it's FREE.
