tranf fluid cap-off rip-off

I am the one that let a cupful of trans fluid out of my 2005 V6 SE by mistake when I was changing my oil.

I took my truck to the stealership today to get it capped off since I am taking a trip next week to the beach in it. The stealer wanted to charge me for a whole gallon of trans fluid at $70. He said they were the only place to buy it and it doesn't come in quarts.

Is there anyplace to buy this new sealed system transfluid in quarts? I know a cupful probably isn't an issue but ...I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I found another dealer that sold it to me for $40. I paid they put it in and I had to debate with the service manager to get the remainder of the fluid back. I may never use it but I paid for it. If anyone needs any let me know.

If it was really just a cup full, go to another dealer. Your 4Runner is safe to drive. That one does not want your business, they just want a sale right now. There are a lot of dealers. They are like cans of tomato soup. It's hard to pick at first just looking at the label. Also try an independent Toyota shop that looks clean and has qualified mechanics. They want your business and are less likely to bend you over the counter for a gallon of transmission fluid. We need to start listing the good dealers and shops and reward then with our business. The other ones can just be left out so that no one gets upset and sues this web site.

Does your transmission use the new WSATF? If so the last time I checked the dealer showed that it was sold by the quart. Just make sure you don't mix the new WS with the type IV transmission fluid, if you do it will f#uck up your transmission. If you do have the new sealed transmission without the dipstick that is using the WSATF, at what mileage are you changing the fluid? Toyota states that it is a "lifetime fluid" and only needs to be changed at 60K miles "if" you tow.

I had to add 1/2 of a quart of fluid. Got 1 quart @ the dealer for $ 3.98. And added some at home.

ok here's a dumb question.

i tried to do my first oil change on my '04 SR5 and being an idiot, i opened the wrong drain plug, and lost a few quarts of tranny fluid before i realized my mistake and plugged it back up.

luckily, there's a toyo dealer within a mile of my house, so i can ride my bike over there and buy a few quarts to replace it. Looking under my hood, i don't see where the tranny fluid goes.

Please help out an idiot and tell me where the heck i pour in the new tranny fluid goes.

I paid 3.98/qt for 3 quarts of fluid. So it turned out to be a $12 mistake.

A 2003 uses a different type of ATF then the 2004 and they are not compatible. What year is your 4runner? 2004 uses WSATF. Hope they gave you the right ATF

A couple of years ago when I was changing the oil in my Camry, I started adding oil before reinstalling the plug. I lost 1 or 2 quarts of Mobil 1. :upset:

the 04 V6's still use Type IV.. and since he said he had a tranny dipstick, i'd have to assume it to be a v6.

yep, it is a V6, and unless my owner's manual, dipstick notation, AND dealer are wrong, it does take Type IV tranny fluid.

I was talkin about the V8's. They didn't go with the 5speed in the V6 until 2005, did they?
