I am getting ready to replace my radiator on my 98 limited 4WD. This is being done as preventive maintenance . The Runner has 168K miles. I thought about a cooler, but I live where the temps can get below zero degrees. Is it true that the transmission fluid can gel if the temps get too low? I think driving after first start in the morning at 60 MPH could gel the fluid in the cooler ?

I think most non synthetic ATF pour points are in the -20C. Synthetics pour points can go as low as -60C.
Buy a B&M 70264 (my favorite) or another ATF cooler that has a LPD built in to it to allow the ATF to gradually warm up. And don't drive 60mph right away unless it is for the right reason(s).

Are you doing this to prevent the pink milkshake? If so, just replacing the radiator will fix that problem. If you are towing or crawling then definitely get the B&M LittleCaesar mentioned above (I have it too), but otherwise I would think you would be fine.
