tranny for 94

We bought a 94, V6 4Runner with a badly cracked transmission. We were told by a couple of people with reference books that the only trannys that will fit this are ones from a 94 only 4Runner, or one from a 95 truck. From what I have found so far it looks like more models would fit it. The truck is not here presently (still at tranny shop), but from surfing around it looks as if it would have the 3VSE motor and the A340H transmission-does that sound correct? Why would the books say a 94 only will fit? I am assuming as long as we find the same number tranny it would fit no matter what year it was from...would this be a correct assumption?

Thanks!

I don't know but I would think 2wd or 4wd would be important info. Which do you have?

EDIT: Be patient, once some of the 3rd generation people see this you'll probably get a good answer.

I checked with the Toyota garage today to see about transmissions out of a 90 and a 93 4Runner (to see if either one would fit our 94) and all 3 were different according to the VIN numbers. What the heck! The Toyota parts guy told me he was showing on his computer that only another 94 4Runner or a 94 extended cab truck will fit - that stinks!

How difficult would it be to put a new housing on our transmission? The only thing wrong with ours is a badly cracked housing (beyond repair).
