Tranny grinding in 4 Lo

Hey everybody,

I was just coming back from a hike when I put my 05 sport v8 with 88k into 4lo when approaching a steep descent. I did what I always do, which is come to a complete stop, put it into neutral, then switch it over into 4 LO. When I put my foot on the gas there was an awful grinding noise. So I put it back into 4 HI and all was fine. Thinking that maybe I was on too steep a slope I tried it again on flat ground and the same thing. I'm already thinking worst case scenario that my tranny is shot but I'm hoping somebody out there can give me some good news or at least something to try. Thanks

PS-4 LO worked fine 2 weeks ago and the only work done since is bodywork.:wtf:

It sounds to me like it did not compleyely engage 4lo. Maybe the actuator is going bad.

Thanks for the response. I will check that out. After reading some posts from other users I realize I may have mistakenly attributed the noise to the transmission. This is probably due to the fact that I've had so many transmission problems in the past. It sounds like it could be an issue with the hubs locking in 4 LO as well. I'd really appreciate any other ideas as well. Thanks a lot.

Hmmm. Say that again? On your truck, in full time 4wd, your hubs are always locked. You don't even have an option to unlock your wheel hubs.....

Sure your DAC wasn't on and you were just hearing the GRRRR of the control system?

Did the truck move or just grind? Were you on a hill facing up or down the hill. We have a hill hold feature on the trucks...if it were to start rolling backwards the abs kicks in to hold it in place. Never heard of one grinding. I would try switching back and forth between 4hi and 4lo over the course of a few minutes...once it's toggled probably 2-3 times...see if everything works in 4lo. Try it on flat ground first to just make sure everythings working. My guess is that it was the abs pump doing it's thing to stop you from rolling backwards...but without hearing it, it's hard to tell.
