Who in here has had to rebuild or replace the tranny in their 4th gen 4runner? How many miles on it when it went out?

I ask because mine has had 2 or 3 hiccups over the last week where it randomly revs like it's in neutral when it's really in 2nd gear on a normal acceleration curve. I'm at 65k and wondering if it's nothing or the tip of the 'berg.

This trans adapts to your driving habits. When I first bought mine it did things like this and I was worried about the same thing. One thing you might try before starting to worry is to pull the positive terminal off the battery and let it sit for 15 minutes. This erases your "profile" and when you start driving again the trans relearns your driving habits. Hope it's something simple. These are really tough transmissions though.
 
Is that true? The transmission really "learns" your driving style? I just got my '05 from my dad, do you think I need to reset it?
 
I've always gone easy on the motor unless in an emergency. So my 4runner probably thinks I'm a shrivled up old blue-haired lady that can't see over the wheel. I just had my 60k mi. full service done - I'll check my book after work to see if that trans service was included. Prob not I would imagine.
 
The 5 speed transmissions have the learning technology I know for sure because my wifes Lexus RX330 did it and I had to have it in the shop several times for slipping when we did a "rolling stop". I am not sure if the 4speed automatics do though.

anyone else know?
 
I would reset the transmission and see if that fixes it. It's a pretty common issue and make sure the fluid and filter has been changed.

Yes, it adapts to different driving styles. The engine does the same thing. The good thing is that if you are a consistent driver (always stopping and accelerating the same way) it probably took less than a half tank of gas to adapt to your driving habits.

This actually is why you see people claiming that some trick or mod they did increased HP and torque on a dyno. What actually happens is the first time the vehicle runs on the dyno, it is a new situation that the engine/tranny has not tuned itself for. Once the trick or mod is done and it goes back onto the dyno, the vehicle knows how to make more power under these circumstances.

If you drive hard like me and try to do a reset on your car, its gonna feel like you've lost about 20-30 HP for a day or so (at least, in my V8 it feels like that)
 
this is good to know...and pretty darn cool. so if i undo the positive terminal for 15 mins to make the tranny reset, what all do i have to reset on the electronic side of things? just radio stations? anything else? like my Nav memory presets, compass, etc?
 
So it sounds like rather than doing a system reset (battery off) I should just let it run its course and learn my driving style since it doesn't take very long?
 
I find myself with the 4.0 V6, that I drive very light on the pedal and sometimes take my foot off the gas and let it coast especially if there is a downgrade of any kind. I find the V6 has more than ample power for me. I guess I try and get that MPG on the computer go way up, then I fill it up and I get 2 1/2 miles per gallon less, kind of a bummer.

Drivers window, sunroof and tailgate window. Cycle the windows down then up and hold the up position for a few seconds. Cycle the sunroof open then closed and hold for a few seconds.

Have you tried using the shifter to go to first gear then wind it up and shift manually to second, do the same thing and shift to third? If the shifts are tight and snappy I wouldn't worry about the trans.

Ruffian will be getting her tranmission fluid change here soon. To Royal Purple tran. gear oil. Either I'm going to figure out how to do it on my own, or I'll just pay to have it done. Hey, I get to call girls rules for some things k? :biggrin2:
