I apologize for making a new post for every problem i come across just figure that it would get a better response this way.But anyway i put the 4runner in reverse today at lunch and it seem to be ok backing up as long as i dont give it gas.Once i give it gas it seems to slip, but will back up on its own if i leave it alone.Could this just be that i should change the fluid and filter? It seems to shift fine , i havent payed to much attention to it.I have only driven it a few times since ive owned it.Its a 90 with a 3.0

A tranny service is not a bad idea at all but did you check your fluid level after this happened? might be low causing this issue.

I would do a transmission service, look for metal in the pan or in the filter. If no metal you can use break clean to clean the filter then throw it all back together with a new gasket and fluid. It is a screen filter, so as long as there is no metal in it you will be ok to use it again.
