I have an '87 4runner DLX with 4 speed automatic and i cant stand it. Its always searching for gears and maxing out rpms up here in the mountains of North Carolina. I need to go to a 5 speed manual and was wondering if anyone has done the swap, how hard was it, and hopw much did it cost you?

thanks,
Nate

First, what size tires do you have? If they're larger than stock and you still have stock gears, that's contributing to your problem.

Swapping in a manual isn't that hard if you're mechanically inclined. You'll need a trans and t-case, and probably have to deal with the autos ECM.

I have stock rims and tires. I just need that extra gear because in a 5 speed the gears are shorter which is all i need. Unless there is some way to "regear" and autiomatic which i dont think anyone does right?

I have done 3 and am going to be doing my 4th coming up soon. R151F into my 87 22RE 4Runner. I usually just buy the entire parts truck and take what I need to do the swap. I do have some spare parts that you may need like pedals, hydraulic line, and a few other odds and ends. Its pretty straight forward. I usually cut out the center hump from the donor cab and weld it in to the swapee als to get the boots to fit nicely.
