Tranny Trouble! Won't engage reverse gear

I have a 97 4cyl with 330,000+ miles on it, and when I run it cold it shifts really high, at around 2500 - 3000 rpm and won't engage the reverse gear unless I drive it for a while and has shifted through all the gears. After that it will engage in reverse just fine as long as I don't brake hard or turn it off. Did a search here on the forum, the oil level is fine, checked the radiator and no problems there either. Has anybody else had this problem, and what was the culprit?

The cold shift is 100% normal, all of our vehicles do that.

A fluid color check/replacement looks to be in order, it's by far the cheapest potential fix.
