Trans compatability between years

I've seen it before but can't seem to find it again. I have a 2000 Ltd with an auto trans. It possibly needs replaced; is there an issue with replacing it with one from a 98?

I just had to replace a trans in a 98 ltd 2wd. From what I understand compatibility is pretty good between the years as long as it came from a 4runner. Of course this was with a 2wd so I don't know about 4wd trans swaps, but I'd bet its the same. We put a 97 trans in the 98 and it was fine. Like I said when we were researching it looked like all the years had the same transmissions, but that could be wrong.

We contemplated using a sequoia 2wd trans for the 98, because the bell housings can be swapped. We found out though that the line pressure for the sequoia was electronically controlled as opposed to cable in the 4runner. So, when looking for a trans I'd just stick to something out of a 3rd gen.

If anyone else can back up whether the years are the same that would be cool, it worked for me but I don't know if the newer years (1999 -2002) have any differences.

Good luck either way

You'll want a 99 or 00. There were differences in the valve bodies between years. Whether this has an impact on the ability to swap without issues, I do not know. I erred on the side of caution and found one from the same model year.

An 01 or 02 tranny definitely will not work.

I have read this before which is why I am selling my spare 99 trans cause I won't be using it in an 02 if mine breaks :/

And to add, since you have a 2000 you're in the Cali vs Federal emissions stage. You should have no problems putting a federal tranny into a cali vehicle or vice versa. The only difference is the dipstick tube. I've got a federal tranny in my cali 4runner and it works great. :thumb3:

I put a '97 trans in my '99 without issue. There are internal valve body differences, but they are compatible externally.

I would venture that '96-'00 are compatible. '01-'02 use an electronically controlled line pressure instead of cable like the earlier models are aren't compatible.
