I have a 1998 3.4 v6 auto trans 4x4 it's a California truck. it has 2 cats. I bought the denso 234-4154 its about 2 inches to short the part # on the one I took off is a toyota denso # 89465-35520 I can't find it. does anyone know which one I need?

Guessing you mean the wire harness is too short...

Ourisman lists the OEM sensor at $434
Rock Auto lists the Denso sensor at $53
I'd be tempted to lengthen the harness at those prices.

'98 won't matter for CA vs. Federal emissions for O2 sensors. That update happened with '99-'00 until they all matched 'CA Emissions' in '01. Any chance there is an 'odd' history with the truck?

no odd history that I know of.
I called toyota with my vin and they gave me toyota part # 89465-39855. I cross referenced that # on denso website and it came out 234-4154 the part I have. so did rock auto put the wrong part in the box?

I have a 2000 with California emissions and that's the one I bought. I don't recall what research I did to confirm the part number.

234-1454 has a 12.91 inch harness and is for '98 4WD. 234-4153 has an 18.5 inch harness and is for '98 4WD. Thing is, there should not be two cats, as mentioned above. i would suggest either you are mistaken about what the second cat actually looks like or you are mistaken about what year your truck is. If you post a pic of the emissions label under the hood I can tell you exactly which. The labels are tricky; you have to know what to look for. If indeed it is a '99 Cali., will need to know if 4WD and 5sp or auto to get correct p/n.

my 1998 NOV MFG DATE is a 99' model, its not uncommon for people to think they have a 98 when its actually a 99' build.

This is sounding like the issue. Sounds like it is actually a '99... can also be easy to tell based on the front bumper, which was updated to the 'fat lip' version for the '99 model year (which does NOT line up with 1999 calendar year).

So on the vin sticker it says the date is 8/ 97 and the 10th # in the vin is a W. it also does not have a fat lip bumper. on the smog sticker under the hood it says Ho2s(2) twc+twc

That's really weird. That means you have two cats but also two O2 sensors and no A/F sensor. In any case, all I can suggest is figure out what harness length you need and use the link I posted to get the right length. Or just say screw it, and order the Denso universal which is the sensor plus a pigtail you splice onto your old sensor plug. All those bolt-on O2 sensors and their plugs are identical; the only difference is the harness length between plug and sensor.
