Trans Cooler question 4454 or 4589?

I want to add an external transcooler and bypass the radiator. I have looked at the older posts, and many people have used the Tru-cool 4454 (7 1/4 x 11 x 3/4). The 4454 has a GVW rating of 18K and a BTU rating of 13K.

However, I live inthe deep south and my Runner will see outside temps of 100+ with high humidity and stop and go traffic.

So, I am considering the Tru-Cool 4589 which measures 8 x 11 x 1 1/2. Almost identical to the 4454 except in thickness. It also has a GVW rating of 24K with a BTU rating of 21K. About 40% more cooling than the 4454.

Would this be overkill? Would the extra 3/4" thinkness be a problem with installation?

There is plenty of room in there for the larger cooler (besides, what is it? a 1/4 inch thicker?). Our 4runner will also be seeing temps over 100 many times since we live in central CA. But I'm not concerned. The 4454 has much more cooling than what was there stock. Have you seen a pic of that little dink?

I don't see a problem with going bigger. Plenty of room, and the extra surface area will help when it's that hot out.

I just got finished installing a 4490. There is plenty of room for anything else. It was a squeeze to get it in behind the center brace but its in and working flawlessly

I heard of over cooling your ATF so keep that in mind. You want a good viscosity and over cooling it can lead to decreased performance.

My 4490 has a built in bypass. I should be good to go. It has been working good so far. IT has been below zero and performs great. kI'm just waiting for the true test this summer, pulling the dirtbike trailer to hills in 100 degree heat.
