Trans cooler, too cold??

Correct me if I'm wrong here I thought the reason for this mod was to avoid the dreaded pink milkshake not because we wanted increased cooling to the trans , is the op doing a bypass or a secondary cooler, in case of bypass I don't see that much extra cooling really happening at least not enough to worry about , but that also depends on rad placement as well .

So everyone is gonna tell me Im doing it wrong and flame me for it but its worked for me for the last 2 years with no problems ~40,000 miles. I bypassed the radiator cooler and got a oil cooler out of a dodge 1500 at pick n pull for $15, its big. All my temps are taken with a scangauge II

Now Ive been towing jet skis around with this truck quiet often, most recent one is ~2klbs loaded going to the lake. I travel up and down CA to and from school in Chico back home to LA. The grapevine on the 5 isn't the easiest of hills to get over, especially for the 3.4 when its loaded down with all my stuff to move to school. I take this truck up to the mountains (mammoth or tahoe), its seen as low at -5*F. In cold temps 20-30* it takes about 15-20 min to get it good and warm. at that point the temps setting to 105-130. On hot days 90+ *F it settles down to around 140-160. The highest I've EVER seen it is 182 and that was driving around pismo beach in high range for about 45 min.

IMO I think the whole you HAVE to have it at 150-180* to operate is not true. Yes the oil will be more viscus at that temp. In my experience over the last couple years MY rule of thumb is keep it above 100*F when operating. My truck has 198k on the ODO and everything is original and runs great getting 19-20mpg highway.

This is my experience take it or leave it. Hopefully it helps someone.

Thanks- I think I'll have it installed and get a gauge to monitor it.

Can someone recommend a gauge that installs nicely in 3rd gen and works well?

Does anyone make a product that can be attached to an entertainment screen (I have a Pioneer AVH4400)........that would be soooo ideal.

I can probably find it elsewhere in the forum but what is the optimal transmission running temp? What are the danger zones?

^ thats exactly what I've decided to do. I ordered myself an autometer trans temp gauge. I have used autometer in all my vehicles and trust there gauges/sensors. I have my cooler installed right against the rad, I figure it will get enough heat from the rad that way. And if I see my temps to cold I'll fab some little sheet metal pc to fit infront of the cooler in the winter.

any odb-II reader with a video out will work, most of them do, just make sure your head unit has the appropriate connections and you set the head unit up to view the odb2 scanner as a rear view camera monitor and you should be good to go...
