Transmission Cooler 2024?

Hi guys,

It's finally time for me to install in external trans cooler, which I'll do in series rather than standalone. From what I can tell, the Truecool, which a lot of people run, have been discontinued or at least are out of stock.

Anybody have any recommendations for what I can get in 2024?

B&M makes a fantastic cooler as well, although they're out of stock in a lot of places. I have the 70268 on my 4Runner and its done great since installing it back in 2016. Recently purchased the 70264 for my other vehicle (2007 Accord) but haven't installed it yet. I had to purchase that privately from someone and got a good deal on it. It was lightly used but not for very long from what I can tell.

If you're able to purchase the exact one you want, maybe reach out to some people who are in the parts business or maybe even create a thread in the classifieds section, WTB: TrueCool trans cooler p/n XXXXX, or something like that.

I don't have experience with any other brands but there's plenty of others on here who do and I'm hoping will definitely chime in soon.

Take a look at the Hayden 1699

That's what I run (hayden 699) - it is thermostatic so opens at 185 (so cold weather keeps it bypassed until it warms up) - uses turbulators to swirl the fluid in the tubes for max heat dissipation. Got it on amazon for $46 yet its price has increased since.

I mounted it right up against AC condensor - put a fan on it yet do not use it - not needed unless maybe towing over hill-mountain passes.

During central texas 100 degree heat at 2pm it can run 75mph with trans at 170 and engine at 190 (also run in series). Repeated SG can get the trans up to 195 max and cools it down into the 170s within 10-20 secs - impressive.

In effect the radiator cooler acts as a warmer for the trans until the trans maxes out then the trans cooler is acting as a cooler for the radiator LOL.

Thanks for the info guys. What's the difference between the Hayden 699 and the 1699? Pros and cons of either one? It seems like the 1699 is the "heavy duty" version of the 699. I live in Sacramento, so I often see temps of 106+ in the summer, and I live in an area with a lot of hills with low-speed driving, which really heats up my trans. Would the 699 be enough or is the 1699 the way to go? I rarely tow anything, but often camp with a fully loaded rig in the summer.

There are heavier duty Haydens - the 699 has about 12K BTU cooling ability - they have others all they way up to 245K btu - for a tractor trailer maybe LOL.

Yeah I think I'll go with the 699. Are you running an electric fan just for the cooler, or what do you mean about the fan? It's something you can switch on and off?

I have it mounted right up against the AC condensor so the regular engine fan pulls lots of air thru and there is little need for another fan in front of the external cooler except maybe when towing in repeated SG. The fan makes sure to keep the trans fluid under 200.

It'll be plenty for your needs. So yes the fan is manually switched for those rare occasions.

This video might help you. I installed a Hayden 699 and bypassed the radiator cooler. I'm now running a Koyo aluminum radiator which doesn't have a trans cooler, so I'll be bypassed for the rest of the time I own the rig.

699 is cooler alone 1699 is the kit with mounting hardware metal brackets and zip tie thru Rad/condenser type mounting, hose, hose clamps. What you see in Timmy's video thumbnail.

Edit: just did a search no bueno Hayden must have quit offer as kit, cooler alone cost more than when I bought kit in January.

Strange - the hayden 699 i got off amazon in may '24 for $46 (on sale) came with all that was necessary to mount it in 5 mins. They provide more than one way and location of holes around to mount it - so there will be parts left over. Luck all.

With bypassing the rad cooler, do you still have enough cooling in summer months with temps 105+? I was considering that as an option, but am slightly worried it won't have enough cooling capacity. Thanks for the video Tim, I'll definitely use this.

Indeed, fickle world. I payed $79 to door not on sale Hayden box label said 1699.

Pretty sure my 12 year old B&M 70264 cooler has failed. It's dumping transmission fluid on the ground. Made a post about it here. Recently replaced the hoses and clamps, so I'm certain it's not that. Just ordered a Hayden 699 to replace.

12 years is a lot of life out of that thing though. I couldn't find the B&M cooler in stock so I went with the Hayden

What fan do you have on it? I see they have the 526 and I wonder if that would fit. Do you have any pictures of your cooler setup?

I have the B&M 70264 but I want something with more cooling.
