Trans Fluid Reqs 2000 Manual 4X4

Question up front: I know GL4 is preferred for the trans, so my question is, is 80/90 or 75/90 required for the diffrentials.

Background: Got some conflicting information from several service shops and postings on this site. For a 2000 5 speed manual 4X4 SR5, a posting specified the following using Redline synthetic:

transmission = GL-4 75W-90 (3.5 qts.)
transfer case = GL-5 75W-90 (1.5 qts.)
differentials = GL-5 80W-90 (2.0 qts. front, 2.5 qts. rear)

However, several shops have said 75/90 GL4 or 5 for ALL areas.

This information is mostly wrong...
Check your owners manual. The diffs take 75w90 gl5, the transfer case can take either 75w90 gl4 or gl5, and the transmission takes 75w90 gl4.
The front diff is only like 1.1 quarts and the rear is 2.2 I think? (But this doesn't realllly matter because the distance between drain and fill is the exact amount of oil needed. You can't put in too much even if you wanted to. It's only good to know the quantities for when you're buying the oil.)

GL4 fluids don't have sulfur in the oil which can damage the synchros and cause poor shifting. The manual says gl4 or gl5 but loads of users (including myself) have experienced MUCH smoother shifting with GL4 oils (especially Redline's MT-90).

Just put redline mt90 (gl4) in my first gen's trans and transfer case and it is seriously a night and day difference in smoothness in shifting and noise. This weekend I'll be doing the differentials with Valvoline synthetic 80w-90 gl5 then after I'll be doing the 3rd gen.

"Required" is a strong word here.

I personally use 75W-110 Severe gear in my differentials. Heavier than what is "required" but I've yielded no negative results. A 5 unit difference in low viscosity flow is going to be completely unnoticeable.

Did anyone else experience similar results?

Theyre old, big transmissions so I wouldn't expect much! Mine has a thick shift on cold mornings but it's expected

MT-90 warms up faster than the factory fill did or the Valvoline syn I used before I switched. It is great stuff. For me, it shifts fine after about 5 minutes at 20 deg F.

I ran the GL4 Redline MT90, two consecutive changes in about 4-6months because I did not like how it shifted. Felt it was more notchie for my liking especially in 1 to 2 shifting & 3 down to 2. I switched then to Amsoil Severe Gear 75W120 GL5 and I ain't looking back. For whatever reason & I do have a short shifter installed, the Amsoil 75W120 worked better for me up in Ontario, Canada than the Redline did. Just my experience.

If you look in the owners manual (available online if you lost it), it says:

Manual Tranny 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5
Transfer Case 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5
Front Diff 75W-90 GL-5
Rear Diff SAE 90 above 0 degrees F

Note that many have given you information that doesn't agree with the Toyota documentation.
