Trans Revving when shifting to 5th; ‘04 v8 with 115k miles

This past year I’ve noticed that my 04 v8 SR5 will rev a little before going into 5th. I’ve noticed it only does it when it’s very warm or when I first start driving when it’s very cold out. It only does it at part throttle and sometimes with no throttle.

The truck has around 110k miles on it. The trans fluid hasn’t be changed since I owned it. It also doesn’t appear the truck was ever towed with or off road.

I wanted to see if there are common fixes for this or if I should just bite the bullet and get it diagnosed at a transmission shop.

Thanks in advance.

Fluid level could be a little low I would guess. Start simple and cheap, change the fluid and make sure level is good. If it still does it then take it to a TRUSTED shop. It could be a solenoid or something sticking/going out and nothing major or expensive.

I did order 4 qts of the correct fluid for a drain and fill. I may try that first before taking it to a shop. I didn’t check the fluid level but truck has zero leaks so I never thought I needed to for the transmission.

I took it to a shop recommended by the garage I trust. After a thorough test drive which showed the shop the problem, the trans shop opened the pan which was contaminated with pieces of transmission. Now they are rebuilding the trans with an estimate of $3k for the job. I'm hoping a new torque converter and a rebuild will get me another trouble free 100k miles out of this truck.

The trans was rebuilt but the problem persists. The truck has been in and out of the shop now and for the last week has been there. The shop is struggling to find why it revs before shifting into 5th. I'm going to stop in at the shop to ask about progress tomorrow to see if they found the issue causing this or a solution.

It's frustrating that I bought this model and engine for a solid trans reputation and now it's having such a hard to diagnose problem.

The shop now thinks there's a possible issue with the valve body. They ordered a repair kit for it and hopefully I'll hear about good progress Monday when they reinspect the valve body.

I'm sorry for your troubles and the shop is not as knowledgeable as you'd hoped. Seems like more and more shops are part swappers vs troubleshooters.

Might as well upgrade to the Nomad Valve Body while you're in there:

I would have if I wasn't broke from the original cost of the rebuild.

I called the shop and it sounds like the valve body fixed it. They are doing an extensive amount of test drives to be sure. Hopefully I'll get to drive the truck this weekend.

I truely hope they aren't charging you more for replacing the valve body, $3000 already sounds a bit expensive as it is, my transmission shop quoted me right at $2100 if I ever need mine done, I had no reason to think I would need to get mine rebuilt, but I have had this shop do 2 rebuilds on other vehicles in the past so I just called him to check what it would run me, maybe he gave me a good price because of my past business, I might check a few other shops out of curiosity.

So they charged you $3000 for a rebuild and that didn't include a rebuilt or replaced valve body? If that's the case, they seriously ripped out off.

I know that some of the 80 owners have done a similar mod to their valve body by purchasing a DIY kit from FelPro, I think it was. It's not for the faint of heart obviously but it is far less $$$ than a valve body from Rodney. I'm curious if a similar DIY kit exists for the A750 tranny. I tow quite a bit and this kit would help out for sure.

Given that it was original fluid, for the next person looking at this thread, I would have done a fluid swap for valvoline Maxlife, added a bottle of Lubeguard Red, and taken it on a nice long highway drive with the trans in 4. Likely this would free up a stuck valve body, as Maxlife likely has detergents that WS doesn’t, and Lubeguard Red is well known in the industry for freeing up stuck parts and cleaning up plates.

Sorry you ended up so much into it, also sounds like the shop messed up the rebuild by not doing a new valve body in the first place.

I had a crazy amount of issues with my transmission when I first got ownership of it. It would hang up and rev high-ish in 4th and then shake while in D. All I did was a full 12 qt+ fluid change and after about 100 miles-ish it was driving like new. You better get some money back for that service. Also if they put Toyota Type WS get that crap out of there. Use Valvoline Maxlife, or if you really want to treat it good put some AMSOIL in it.

After the new valvebody the shifts are much cleaner and it doesn't seem to skip over 4th like it used to when downshifting.

The problem is that it now shakes (rumble strip shake) which it never did before the rebuild and still it revs before going into 4th at low speeds and part throttle.

I'm taking it back to he shop and will bring up fluid type with them.

Thanks for all the replies. If it wasn't for starting a new job I would have tried a lot of these suggestions before taking it to the shop.

It's back at the shop. It is getting a second torque converter now along with a remanufactured valve body. I threw out the suggestion of a different fluid so maybe they'll go with it this time around.

Have they checked the pins on the connectors from your shifter? Mine (2003 V8, SR5, 150k miles) was shifting erratically and slamming in and out of gear. The transmission was fine, but there was a broken pin on the plug going into the trans, so it didn't know where it was. May be worth a look, as these pins are about .030" in diameter, maybe smaller, and I'm kinda surprised they don't fail more often.
