Trans Revving when shifting to 5th; ‘04 v8 with 115k miles

I’ve noticed something different and I wanted to see if anyone could help me diagnose this at all...

The trans has a year of driving on it and continues to have the shifting problem but thankfully it isn’t every day nor at all speeds. It also hasn’t gotten at all worse from almost a year ago. What I have noticed is the trans shifts fine if the car is on the cruise control. I can pinpoint when the car will have the shifting problem, put it on cruise, then it will shift fine into fifth. If it wasn’t on cruise I’m sure it would have the rpm spike. Could this indicate the accelerator pedal being the problem?

I just read your whole thread. Wow, I can’t even believe you are still dealing with these issues after all that money and time! First, did they at least give you a partial refund, since they failed to FIX ANYTHING? Second, have you thought about finding a reputable Toyota dealer to have them check it out? I’m usually very remiss to recommend a stealership for anything, but they do have all of the factory software and hardware tools at their disposal so they may find it’s related to the ECU rather than being a mechanical issue at all.

Thanks to this thread, I now know of that Nomad valve body. Wow, that is a cool, but expensive upgrade. Does anyone on this site actually run it? I’d love some feedback on how it actually works in real life, other than what they say on the site selling the product.

Someone else mentioned the connector on the driver's side of the transmission which connects the ECM to the valve body. Corrosion in this port can cause all sorts of unexplainable issues.

Although as I think this out loud, this should have been addressed when replacing the valve body unless they re-used the old wiring harness.

I’m sure they reused the trans harness. I’ve inspected all the connectors and used cleaners on them and I see no corrosion. I wish they would have replaced the harness but their warranty on the trans and labor specifically Excluded electrically related problems with the work and it seemed they didn’t want to dive deeper.

I’ve also cleaned and inspected the shifter connector and throttle body and maf connectors. I haven’t done this with the accelerator connector yet so I will do that soon as well.

I tried for a refund but their warranty on the work excludes any issues due to vehicle electronics. Considering they rebuilt it a couple times, or at least that’s what they told me, I do suspect it’s an electronic issue.

I said the same thing to the shop but they annoyingly responded saying they did rebuild the trans, so they did that even though they have no idea why it had a problem or why it continues to have it.

The trans shop did pay to have it diagnosed at a dealer. I then met the technician and test drove it with him as well. The problem is with this trans Toyota doesn’t diagnose internal issues with it. According to the tech they just send it to Toyota as a core and they are shipped a rebuilt one and they let Toyota corporate diagnose what cause it to fail.

I’m very frustrated by this ordeal and have considered selling the truck many times but even if it goes through a used trans every couple years, it’s still way cheaper than buying another or having a car payment at all.
