2004 4Runner SR5 V8 w/115k miles, Northern VA car
This past spring and summer I noticed that when the trans was shifting into 5th, when I let off the gas, the RPMs would spike about 500 rpm before shifting into 5th. Not knowing anything about these transmissions, I dropped it off at a recommended trans repair shop in Fredericksburg, VA (Superior Transmission).
The shop eventually got the car to reproduce the symptom. They did some diagnosing then recommended to drop the pan to look deeper. I agreed. They dropped the pan and reported there was "debris" in the pan. Based on the symptom and the fluid condition, they recommended a rebuild. I agreed.
After I got the truck back the SAME symptom came back. The truck went back to the shop where they took it apart again, then they did a shift kit on the valve body which didn't fix it, then they rebuilt it a second time, then they bought a different used trans, rebuilt that (thinking it was a case issue), and then it still showed the same symptom again. They took the truck to the local Toyota dealer for a diagnosis.
The dealer noticed that the fluid was the wrong type and that there was some corrosion of some trans connectors. The dealer fixed the corroded plugs and the trans shop flushed out the old fluid and added Toyota WS. They then reset the shift points.
I drove it this week for 3 days. The first 2 days there was a minor spike in RPMs just a couple times when going into 5th. By the third day, once the trans was warm, it was doing the spike in RPMs for 5th more consistently again (only when letting off while the car up shfits). Since the first rebuild, the trans also shakes at certain speeds. Right now it has a shake between 35-60 MPH.
The trans shop doesn't know what to do. They said they would honor the warranty when it fails again, but they don't know why it's shifting improperly. The dealer mechanic who rode with me and did the work on it also didn't see an obvious problem from driving it and doing his own diagnostics.
My guess is it could be the trans and/or engine wiring. Has anyone had an issue like this and if so, could you help me with some tips on dealing with this?
