Transfer box chain

1996 Hilux Surf 5 Speed, W59 transmission with straight-shift transfer case.

This is my first chain-driven transfer case, and when I turn the front output flange of the transfer case, I can hear a growling sound. Sounded kind of normal to me but louder than I expected.

So, I opened up the transfer case today just to be sure. The transfer case is mint inside, I don't think the truck has ever been off-roaded.

The noise is coming from the transfer case chain, the sound of the links moving. With the chain out and in my hand, it's surprisingly stiff, totally different from the engine timing chain or a motorcycle chain.

Is this normal? It was so clean in the transfer box, very little metallic stuff on the magnet, so I would be surprised if the chain was worn. I didn't see any checks / tolerances stated in the FSM though...

Has anyone had their chain out and felt it?

Thanks!
