Transfer Case/Actuator Fluid.... Atf???

Toyota, 4Runner

2004 V6 4x4

I dropped my Transfer Case, check my gear oil, all was great, opened the Actuator and it was filled with ATF ??? The gear oil in the Transfer Case was not mixed with ATF, and the ATF in the Actuator was not mixed with Gear oil, so both are pure...

But.... isn't the fluid in the Actuator be the Gear Oil from the Transfer Case?!? If so.... what is the ATF doing in there and how is it not mixing with the Gear Oil in the Transfer Case....

Has anyone hear actually opened up their Actuator, and can confirm if they have the (brownish) Gear Oil, or the (redish) ATF in the 4x4 Actuator?

So you took the Actuator (black box thing) out of the transfer case? It should be the same as the transfercase.

I had a leak from the actuator and it was most definitely gear oil. My question is if you did get that actuator off, how? According to Toyota, the whole transfer case has to be split to get access to that.

There is a cap that seals the Actuator, it's held on by six screws. If you take that cap off you will have access to the internals of the Actuator. To take the complete Actuator housing off the Transfer Case, then you need to open the rear housing on the Transfer Case.
