transfer case actuator gear timing? **UPDATE**

So my 4x4 has been broken for a long time now. After driving through some water it stoped working.

I finally decided to open the actuator's cover while its still attached to the transfer case. I cleaned it all out and tested the motor but I pulled the gear as well and it might not be properly lined up now.

I have manually turned the gear all the way to the right putting the 4runner in 2wd. The blinking lights don't stop. Does anyone have any experience or pictures of the proper gear timing( location) it only seems to line up with the gear in a few places.

Ive been reading a bunch of posts over at yoda tech but only found pics from older 4runners. my 2002 looks a little different.

Isn't all 3rd gens have a lever instead of an electrical actuator?

I know the 4th gen got the actuator and lots of problems associated with it. Also, there is some sort of timing and each removal to correct the timing requires to reinstall a new oil seal.

Just figured I would updated everyone. I tried and tried but could never get the 4wd working again with the stock actuator. We could never get it working as it should.

I bought a new transfer case from a junk yard near Las vegas for $175 and just swapped it. 4wd is working as it should now.

Things learned......stay out of water, nothing ever good comes from mud romping and river crossings :lmao:

Amen! It looks cool, and I love to watch OTHERS do it with their trucks as I stay dry on the sidelines. Recently I went on a camping trip to the outer banks of NC and my buddy drove his Jeep into the surf. It was cool to watch, but there was ZERO chance I was going to spray salt water all over the underside of my truck. :biggrin2:
