Transfer Case Actuator Leak(2004 LTD V8)

Hello all, I'm a new member here and a new (soon to be) owner of a 4runner...has some miles on it, but from the two months of research on which vehicle to buy, it doesn't seem to matter much on these. I'm happy with the price I'm about to pay for this baby but wanted to see some feedback from u guys as well. Had an inspection done yesterday and they said it was in pretty good condition w/ a few things that needed attention which I have posted. Would love ur help, I know I'm a newbie but am looking to own 4runners from here on out :) Thx to all,

***2004 LTD V8 w/ 160,000, sun roof, navigation w/ back-up cam, leather(good), engine replaced at 60,000 but can't seem to track down if it was new or used...Price: after tax $10,000

***Unfortunately the two 4runners I'm considering came from an auction so I'm just trying to be very careful...can't afford a new one right yet

I recently bought my 5th 4runner. Its an 04 ltd 4.7l like yours. I can say you would want to do the timing service asap. I know the book calls for a little over 4 hours, so with kit, new drive belt, t stat & gasket & coolant you're probably close to 800 bucks. I went ahead & flushed out all the Toyota antifreeze so I could run regular green. ( I love OE Toyota stuff for the most part but that antifreeze is crap) Mine had 159,000 on it with the original timing belt & water pump. I assumed it was leaking because the coolant was a little low when I bought it.... I was correct. The water pump had been leaking for some time. Its hard to see with out pulling the covers off, but after you remove the water pump you'll know.

One last thought... the tensioner in the oe kit had casting marks and wouldn't allow the bolts to be properly torqued with out very lightly removing the chamfer'd edge. The 4.7L also has a petcock for the freeze plug that makes it so easy to drain the coolant out of the block if you choose to swap coolant types like I did.
 
I forgot to mention I too have a slight transfer case leak by the actuator housing. I'm pretty sure I can have enough room to put a bead of rtv without having to actually drop the whole tc & transmission. I'll post the results when I have them. All in all I'm very pleased with my truck. I switched to amsiol & have cleaned the tb & fuel rail etc with a motor vac machine. I also use a bottle of amsoil PI every oil change in all my trucks. This week I need to flush the transmission. I'm treating the truck as if its never had service since I don't have all the proof. I did take that into consideration when I purchased it though. I also have brembo rotors & OE Toyota pads.

Let me know if you need OE Toyota pads, I can get them shipped overnight for a lot less than you can buy them from the dealer.
 
Hey, thx for the info...I'm gonna make sure the 4hi and 4lo work ok tomorrow and make the purchase. Knew I would be spending a couple k after I bought it, but like u said, don't know what all has been done to a used vehicle in the past so u have to start treating it as if new.
 
Hey 03' 4x4Runner, thx for reply...yeah I've been lookin into it extensively, has the issue been resolved to where the one they replace the ring doesn't give out now, or will the replacement end up doing the same as well? And I was gonna try and purchase one of those 3month warranties and then act like it started leaking and try to get it fixed on their plan, u think that would work? Did u have to replace urs???

Yes mine has leaked for several years (69K miles now). It does not leak massive amounts and only leaks while driving the vehicle. It does not leak when stopped. I do not put many miles on mine anymore and am not going to fix it but I do not like making a mess on my garage floor. I fixed mine the redneck way and it works fine for me. What i did was removed the handle from a medium frying pan. I removed the transfer case tiny skid plate and cut the frying pan as needed and drilled several holes in it and attached it to the skid plate. I then took an old sock and filled it part way with oil dry and put it in the pan held in with a zip tie. I no longer make a mess in my garage or anyone elses driveway. I have to change the sock every 6 months or so when it get saturated and top off the fluid (usually down on 1/8" to 1/4") after 6 months or so. If this was my main vehicle and I was going to put a lot of miles on it I may fix it but for me this has been good enough. you have to go under there to grease the driveshaft occassionally anyway so just check the oil level then. From the side the drip pan I made is not noticable unless you really look for it. As I said this is redneck but it works for me.
