Transfer case fluid type for 2016 limited

Hello,

What type of fluid is needed for 2016 limited transfer case? Toyota fluid is very expensive.

Can I use Royal Purple Synchromax?

It says this is transmission fluid.

Toyota Genuine Transfer gear oil LF or equivalent SAE 75w
1.1 / 1.5 U.S. quarts (part-time 4wd / full-time 4wd)

I used Mobil 1 75w-90 in my front and rear diffs AND transfer case. Like many on here. However, Toyota recommends their 75w and a lot of people stick with that to be safe.

I use that. I’ve done 2 changes and I’m at 116k miles - no issues.

OEM fluid is not *that* expensive. If I can drop $40 on my date's dinner, I can drop $40 on something that will last 3 years.

I just could never find it...couple of the dealers in the area looked at me like I was insane when I asked for it.

Being a Limited, it is full time 4WD. Like you, my local dealer looked at me like I had 2 heads when I inquired about what they used in the shop, or the Toyota specific fluid.
I found what I needed on Amazon ... bought 2 quarts ... worked like a charm. Even has a very unique spout funnel built in the bottle ... no spill, no drip, ingenious invention actually.

Search on Amazon for: Ravenol SAE 75W. Runs about $19 per quart. The consistency / viscosity seemed very similar to the factory fill that drained out ... to me, the 75W90 gear lube just would not be good for this transfer case, after seeing this Ravenol product.

I used Amsoil 75W90 in the F&R diffs when doing the whole drive line fluid change.

For $40 your date couldn’t have ordered wine!
The cheapest I’ve found the 75W (08885-81080) is $60 plus shipping charges.

75W-90 gear oil. I have used this in both diffs and transfer case for years.

I stick with either Royal Purple ROY01512 Synchromax synthetic or Red Line MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 Gear Oil.
Either will work just fine. Heck, even any old 75w-90 won't hurt anything.

Another dif/transfer oil question

Hello, before i write my question(s) i just want to say thank you for all the contributions on this news forum, i use it alot. Here are my two questions:

Question 1:
I had a misunderstanding of the dif and transfer case service intervals and have now done 95000 kilometers (60k miles) on the original fluid (no towing or off road). I get a grinding noise when turning left, have i damaged the dif/transfer by not doing the fluid change on time? Figured i should do the fluid anyway before i start looking into wheel bearings for the noise.

Question 2:
I am having a hard time finding the correct fluid, Toyota dealer wants way too much money for their special dif/transfer fluids. Locally i can only find Royal Purple Max Gear SAE 75W-90, i see a number of your run that in your dif's but can i also use this in the transfer case?

My aim is to not have to take my truck back to the dealer for any maintenance or repair. So far, i do my own oil changes, front / rear drive shaft grease. I also used this group to fix one of the second row seats not folding down.

Its a 2016 Limited 4Runner with 95000 kilometers on the clock.

Also, anyone in the Brampton, Mississauga or Caledon in Ontario area have the similar truck and want to meet up?

Question 1: I think that's a wheel bearing issue. if you were having transfer case or diff issues you would likely have issues going into 4wd amongst others. are you experiencing that at all

I've always used the Toyota oil and while it's expensive I've never had issues after 160k miles so I stick with it

I used Redline 75w85 in transfer case. Seems to be fine. I have their 75w90 in front and rear diff.

I know this has been beaten to death a gazillion times, but.....

The center diff in the Limited is a Torsen T-3 limited slip diff. On the Torsen website, they state that you should consult your manufacturer's manual for oil specification, but they also share that during their R&D activities they use Chevron Supreme LS 80W-90 as their "house oil".

There are a handfull of GL-4 rated gear lubes with specs that meet Toyota-or get the real Toyota stuff , sure its pricey but you only need a quart.
Note GL-5 is speced for diffs. The syncros in the TC do not like some ingredients in the GL-5.
