Transfer case blew up after a bad u-joint was neglected

Hi guys, my transfer case on a 2005 v8 sr5 4wd 4runner blew up on me last month due to a badly neglected u-joint. I was wondering if any other kind of transfer cases would fit since any 05 v8 transfer cases for 4wd cost an arm and a leg even in the used market.

Do you know what type of neglect the u-joints had, to cause a failure? Not routinely greased? Not routinely re-tightened to their torque specs??

im new to the forum and dont know how to navigte....but i have a quick question will the v-6 tcase fit the v8 2003 4runner? both transmissions are electronic servo motor controlled and look to be the same. let me know please.

Thanks guys, I don’t really know much about transfer cases. I’m more concerned about wear and tear than breakage. In the snowbelt areas I assumed v6 transfer cases only see powered use in poor weather. But the V8 transfer case has same miles as the driveline.

The tx case internals are always turning, doesn't matter.

The bigger issue any 4gen 4r faces in the rust belt is rust. Frame, tranny supports, and here's a serious one for the tranny- the tranny cooler lines. My brother in MD had one rust through and drain the tranny. He replaced the line and refilled the tranny and it runs but it's not the same. Good news is they seldom fail so they're pretty cheap around here as far as used tranny's go.

Either way a thorough body repair shop inspection on a used 4gen 4r is at least as important as a mechanical inspection.

Anyone recently removed v8 transfer case? Mine took a dump and in the process of trying to remove it but not having much luck.

Seems pretty strait forward, after removing the drive shafts there only seems to be 8 bolts connecting it to the transmission. I have these all removed but just can't seem to get it slide out to drop it down.
