Does anyone know how to tell which transfer case you have? Do you know where to get rebuild information for the Transfer Cases?

Yeah, my buddy picked one up from a junkyard for $100.
But usually they are $2-300.
Edit: nevermind I was thinking of the FJ case which is way cheaper than ours.

I have gotten two bad Transfer cases and LKQ (national used parts dealer that will warranty their parts) keeps telling me that its the same transfer case for the V-6 and V-8. I have a V-8 and neither of the two I have received have worked because they came from V-6 donor vehicles. I have the part numbers from Toyota for the V-6 and V-8 and they are definitely different. So that is the reason I was looking to be able to identify which transfer case is which. Also Junkyards in my area are charging $500+ for a used transfer case. I would absolutely love to find one for 2-300. I am to the point of just rebuilding mine if I can find a rebuild manual. That is why I was asking about rebuild information.
V8s are full time 4wd. The only t-case that'll work will have to be from another V8.
I recently purchased an 03 V8 sport but the 4lo actuator is seized. I've tried the recommended tap and turn switch method but it's not working. I don't know that I want to spend the money on another full time electric t-case. I may, I may not. Eventually what I'd like to do is the fj t-case swap however if you look into it you'll find it's a good chunk of work to make it all work. I may just throw a locker in the back and call it good for a while.

If finding a used V8 transfer case is the problem, I just went on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and selected 2006 4Runner, V8 option, and found 5 pages of just V8 transfer cases including a few in Murfreesboro.

V6 and V8 T-case is different… that said, if you are OK with losing the ability to run the t-case “open” which allows for mechanical limited slip / AWD on road, how about a RST conversion to a manual shit t-case? That said, I doubt this route is going to save you any coin.

I haven't torn in to my old one yet. I am betting chain. But will not know for sure until break it open. I was just trying to find a rebuild manual like you can find for some of the New Process T-cases. Then hopefully rebuild. I got burnt buying this thing used or by having it serviced at the stealership. At some point the transfer case was drained and never refilled. No driveway or underbody leaks to be found. Even after it broke I filled it up and it has not leaked at all. My front differential is in good working order. I just keeping getting the wrong T-Case from LKQ.

Not 100% sure. Thinking Chain. But I will not know until I break it open. I just did not want to break it open until I found a manual for it.

Before you open it up I would encourage you to Google " weberauto youtube"
it will take you to Weber State University website. Page down to "Toyota" view full playlist, and open it. Then page down to video 42 " Center differential transfer case" and watch.
It is 42 minutes long, but very informative about the V8 t-case in AWD 4runner, which you have,

The transfer case is really pretty simple once you pull it apart. Chain is not hard to replace.
Problem with used ones is you don’t know if the actuator works or anything else about it.
If yours was driven with no oil though then chances are there is more then a bad chain.
