Transfer case woes

Yesterday I was driving down the free way and started getting a new grinding sound. Truck is a 3.0 auto R150f.

Symptoms: grinding sound when going at speed with foot off pedal, goes away once I get on the gas pedal. Sounds like a grinding clutch but a little softer

Slow fluid leak from back side of the t case where it mates up with the driveshaft.

With the truck on stands I'm neutral the sound is recreated and obviously coming from the tcase

I read on a couple of ranger forums that the symptoms are caused by the range/shifter forks being worn down. Just wondering if any of you guys agree or disagree, I will probably rebuild the whole thing just to be on the safe side. Or would it be better just to pull a used tcase that is in good condition?

I is confused? Is it an auto or 5spd? r150f is the manual gear box. If its the auto, the tranny and transfercase are joined and share fluid. If so....I'd drain the tcase and check for metal bits. If crap is in it....then drain the whole tranny system before losing both. Should be able to pick a used one up pretty cheap from a pick and pull.

If its a manual, i'd look for a replacement first. Then swap it out since the tcase and tranny are seperate. BTW, if its the manny, there's a guy here in austin selling the 5spd to gear driven tcase adapter pretty cheap. I'd go that route if you're replacing it anyways. Then its more reliable and it opens up all kinds of fun options.

Pic is a chain drive case. The chain could be slack and rubbing against the housing of the tcase. Id suspect that the chain might be stretched out and just too slack. Id drain it and check for metal shavings, if its rubbing against the case, it should have a ton of VERY fine shavings. If thats the case, id pull the case out and rebuild it or go to a gear Tcase using an adapter.

Right, I got the a340 and the r150 mixed up, I have a line on an inchworm, just wondering what tcase to use?

^ Yup. If you find a good deal on a forward shift, you can convert it to a top shift. Now, some other food for thought. Your t case right now has a 2.66 reduction, while a stock top shift is 2.28. So unless you do 4.7 gears, youll be loosing a bit of your low range. Also, I believe that youll need a 23 spline input to make it work with the auto, whereas the stock tip shift is a 21 spline. So if you have to buy a 23 spline input gear, you might as well just get 23 spline 4.7s from the start. :keyboard:

I thoguht the same thing, but when I looked it up according to lowrange offroad, inchworm makes a 21 spline adapter allowing you to use a 21 spline factory case. They are currently on backorder though if you try to purchase from lowrange.

With that said I think the best route though as Hyde said would be to do a 4.7 gear set and run a 23spline case. Its tougher and you'll have more low range.

Just so you know, the inchworm kit requires you to teardown the tranny so be realistic on what you want to do here and how much you want to spend. I know when things break its easy to try and upgrade when you're in there but this isn't quite so simple. Make sure you know your options cause I'm not sure I'd want to lay out that kind of money and keep that crappy slushbox.

It was my understanding that the only thing that was changed on the tranny was the parking brake pall. I also have a line on a tcase with marlin 4.7s. My question is (because this is my DD) is this going to make my already underpowered 3.0 harder to get up to speed on the free way because of the lower gearing.

Im confused by what you mean about parking break pall? None of these have a parking break built into them.

You drive in 4 low on the interstate? High range on both boxes is 1:1, so you wouldn't notice the difference in on road driving. But your auto is what is really making the 3.0 feel underpowered...good time for a 5 speed swap?

Basically moving the parking pall into the tranny instead of the tcase, as far as I have been informed that is the only thing that needs to be changed on the tranny. And good to know, it will stay auto for now but who knows for how long :D

Might want to read this build thread. This is the most details I've seen on the adapter install. I don't know anyone who's actually done one yet personally.

I have done 4 ,they are not that bad . The biggest part is getting all the t-case guts out after that its a breeze. Lots of people are afraid of the auto because they have never worked on them ,with a few changes you can make the power hit the ground ! You saw my 88 red runner auto ,never had issues after a little work . If you decide to go this route just plan for a whole day to do it .

Well back to wrenching ,have to get 2 trucks built for Jambo
