Transfer case

I think there is a problem with my transfer case, when I take off I hear what seems to be chain binding and a popping sound. The sound only happens when going slow and I also have a vibration when I let off gas which goes away once I step back on gas. So my question is what is the difference between a 4ruuner t-case and a tacoma t-case? Is it that all tacoma t-cases are gear drive and 4runners are chain?

Are you hearing it when engaged in 4wd? Or all the time?

All the time. Just did tb,wp and front wheel bearings and when I finished that up the 4wd don't work. But I pretty sure that problem is just the acuator on the front axle because the t-case still goes into low just 2wd low.

I did check all the u joint, them seemed tight with no movement. Found a t-case out of a tacoma with low miles on it for good price. Thinking about just changing it anyway.
