When I engage my 4WD and drive the transfer case seems to have a bit of a whinning noise, is this normal, I have not really paid much attention to it before. Has anyone had this issue also? What should I check?
Hmmm, sadly those kind of noises are often from a bad bearing. I would start by changing the tcase oil and inspecting the old stuff for bad things (dirt, water, tiny bits of metal etc).
I doubt a replacement will be necessary, but depends on what the trouble is and how many $$$ it is to fix. Worst case you might need a rebuild.
What are your rigs details? Year, miles, type of driving etc?
my rig is all factory 2000 toyota 4runner SR5 4X4 Auto. I read that if the transfer case makes noise in 4H and 4L and not 2H which is whats happening in my case then there is a problem with the front differential. If I have to get a rebuilt does anoyone have any idea where to get on at a reasonable price.
I had the same question before Christmas with my 2001. I use AWD about 10 times per year in the rain and I heard the whirrring after changing the transfer oil. I am convinced that it was always there and I just noticed it. I could not figure out how my transfer could have gone bad with the use I give it.
