transmissiom dip stick broke off??

Hi guys, I was just doing my maintenece check of all the fluids, and i pulled out the transmission dip stick, it came out o.k., then I wiped it clean and re-inserted it, it felt as though it got stuck half way down, as i tried to pull it back up, it snapped in half, and the bottom half is still in the pipe leading down. I have never had this happen to me before , and honestly, I dont know what to do about it. I was thinking of putting a magnet on a string and try to retrieve it that way, but I was scared the magnet might fall off and find its way into the tranny.I followed the pipe down into the tranny , and half way down, there looks like a small rubber neck in/on the pipe, does this come apart by chance??, or does anybody have any ideas that I could try, I am really lost on this one,,,thanks in advance,,,,,josef,,,,,

Never heard of this happening, but if the stick is removed and inserted a lot, it can probably develop weak points where it bends.

The tube is 2-piece, luckily. The top half should separate from the bottom half. There will be an o-ring between them. Unfortunately, this joint is usually pretty corroded, and it can be difficult to part the pieces.

I wouldn't bother with a magnet. The tube is steel, so the magnet will just stick to the sides as you try to push it down.

Yeah, you may need a new o-ring if they are hard to separate, it'll probably tear the old one. Twisting it back and forth is easier than just pulling on it.

i think there may have been a tsb about this can't remember exactly but it's either us or the tundra that has a known problem with this, found it while reading about brakes last weekend.
